that the Army or Navy or
Coast Guard shoold remedy
at once. A case In point came
up the other day when a ma-
' rlne sergeant with a Purple
Heart and a sheaf of other
decorations asked for a per-
mit to take his wife fishing
with him. He was refused
and became indignant, and
even though efforts were
made to appease him, he
voiced his sentiments in
plain, unvarnished language.
What harm could be done in
a case of that kind? That
man had done as much for
the war as any official who
was following the rules that
no doubt have become obso-
lete like many other laws on
our books.
Recreation in fishing and
boa ting is recognized by
anny and navy recuperation
officers in rehabilitation of
returned casualties. Shoold
they not be encouraged to
fish in the waters around
Newport Harbor? Shoold
Coast Guard restrictions be
so damed technical that a
man who fought to preserve
these waters for Americans
Instead of the Japs, cannot
be amended in a sensible
manner? Local officials are
not to blame but those in au-
thority shoold be able to un-
wind some of this silly red
tape NOW instead of waiting
two or three vears after it is
all over and permit these
boys to enjoy and satisfy
their longings.

Another War to Be Won
The collapse of organized resistance in Germany does not
mean that the war is over. The war was not confined to Eur-
ope. Out in the Pacific there is still a war to be won. This
is not the time for relaxing and "coasting in" to final victory.
From what we have seen In the years of battling with the
Japs, we can't afford the foolish luxury of thinking that
they'll be pushovers even when the combined Allied forces
concentrate on them.
Every American should use V-E Day as an occasion to re-
dedicate himself to the task of making this a better world.
And the mOst urgent unfinished business in this connection is
a trip to Tokyo. We all can't make that trip, but we can do
plenty to help our fighting men get there for us.
Firn of all, we must stay on the job and keep the vital
supplies on the move to the Pacific war zone. To quit now
would be no different than for the soldiers spearheading the
attack to lay down their arms and say, "Let somebody else
finish the job. We've done our part."
Second, we must continue to buy War Bonds. The cost of
the fight in the Pacific alone runs into astrol)Omical sums.
And don't forget that another big reason for buY,ing Bonds is
to help avoid inflation which could be as destructive, in its
oWn way. as bombs and shells.
In addition to these things. let us continue to donate
blood to the Red Cross and to support all activities which aid
the war effort.
The men who are bombing J apan. who are sailing the
trackless Pacific in cargo vessels or fi ghting ships, who are
establishing new beachheads, who are blasting the Japs out
of concrete pillboxes in foot-by-foot advances-these men are
counting on us to carry on here at home.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL
BOARD ELECTION
Friday, May 18
Newport Beach voters are urged to vote this com-
ing Friday for trustee of the Newport Beach Elementary
School district, one director to be chosen.
A number of local groups believe that fathers and
mothers should be represented on the Board, thus more
ably understanding the needs of children.
With this thought in mind and because of his thor,
ough knowledge of the business life of the district, in
which he has lived since childhood, the name of Weston
Jay is presented for the consideration of the voter~ next
Friday .
Mr. Jay grew to manhood here-for years residing
with his parents at East Newport. .. For a few years he was
in business with an oil company in Southern California,
then later returned and operated the. Balboa Hardware
store, later selling out to the Peyton CO. He now is an ex-
ecutive in the South Coast Co. ' . . . . : .
The polls are located at the Grammar School build-
ing on Central A venue and the election is next Friday.
This advertisement is insened .by the friends of
~·Jay without hja knowledge, bat wh~ is a candidate for
tri18tee.
