Ignited the dry O&ts and In
nothing flat a merry blaze
was roaring down the ter-
rain beaded for the house

partment responded and
soon had the fire under con-
trol, but not before the en-
. tire two blocks of weeds was
burned over, although the
house and barn were saved.
All of which brings to mind
the admonition of the fire
chiefs in the harbor district
to be careful in starting fires
outdoors at this time of year.
Incidentally it would not be
a bad idea to mow down the
weeds. The beach has an or-

the county has one compel-

around about a new city hall
and get going, will please a
majority of the citizens of
Newport Harbor. Site No. 4
in the vicinity of Central
avenue · and 32nd street and
the Lido proposed business
section. is the one that was
chosen originally. The city
has the necessary funds, the
sorely needed city hall will
be next door to a central re-
tail business district and
with ample parking, it will
der a service to the pub-

How You Look. Noted
the pleasant features and
foxy apparel of Laureen Ba-
call and Humphrey Bogart
on the occasion of their wed-
ding yesterday, and then
grinned over tbe last time I
saw the pair aboard his boat
in slacks and old clothes.
Here at the harbor you see
movie stars and big shot ex-
ecutives in the wretchedest
kind of wearables, and it's
difficult to distinguish them
from the everyday kind of
human who has to sail the
boat. clean the fish or oper-
ate the engines. Funny thing
about it, though. is that the
big fellows are just as plain
and everyday as the little
guys, which is one reason
why this is the old U.S.A. • + •
Break Down. Had occas-
ion to call Len. Schauer,
former Harborite, at the
Garden Grove bank, and was
· shocked to hear he had a
heart a'ttack and was in an
oicygen tent in the hospital.
Len was in the best of form
Sunday, but had been com-
plaining about the heavy
work at the bank. The strain
of today is taking its toll of
executives and on all sides
you note where this man and
that one is dropping out of
the picture from overwork;
It's too much to expect of an
old bus and a tired pump and
none of us seem able to ease
up or let down until it's too
late. + + +

Now that Germany has been beaten. War Production
Board Chairman Krug seems anxious to allow American in-
dustry to resume as much of its peacetime production as can
be done without hindrance to our Asiatic battlefront.
But Mr. Krug and those who share his views are opposed
by certain government officials who want many war restric-
tions Q>ntinued indefinitely in order to put Amenca on a
''planned economy" basis.
Pointing out the fallacy of a "planned economy" in a re-
cent book, "The Road to Serfdom", the author declares, "In
order to achieve their ends the planners must create power
-power over men wielded by other men--0f a magnitude
never before known ... Democracy is an obstacle to this sup-
pression of freedom ... Hence arises the clash between plan·
ning and democracy."
Of course. would-be "planners" are not ronfined to Wash-
ington. They operate anywhere. They would have either
or both the federal and state governments control virtually
every phase of the citizen's life from "womb to tomb"-
controlling his job, controlling the production of the food he
eats, the clothes he wears. controlling the medical care he re-
seives, controlling his employer and dictating the wages that
shall be paid.
If anyone doubts such a possibility he has only to read
such proposed measw-es as the congressiona l "full employ-
ment" bill. the recently defeated manpower control bill. and
the compulsory health insw-ance plans introduced in \V ash·
ington, D. C. and in our O\\'fl state. All of tl1ese un,vittiogly or
intentionally follow the pattern of the "planned state"-the
antithesis}.of democracy.
The American people must insist upon a return to normal
freedom at the earliest possible moment. They must also in·
sist that no new laws be passed, under any guise, which would
further restrict that freedom.
Nation Without Churches
What a deep sense of loss must settle over a community
which sees its churches knocked to rubble by war and knows
it will be impossible for a long time to rebuild any place of
worship. That is the unhappy situation existing today in
thousands of European towns through which the war has laid
its desolate track.
In France alone, according to a recent communique, 5000
churches have been crushed to useless ruin by bombs and ar-
tillery fire. The wreckage-strewn ground cannot even be ap-
proached until the immediacies of imminent life and death are
settled.
In such stupendous destruction the irreparable damage to
great chun:h libraries. monumental paintings and statuary,
tapestries. furnishings and ancient religious relics are great
indeed. But a far subtler loss striking deep into the hearts of
devout Frenchmen and others today is the loss of beloved and
consecrated spots of worship, however humble or elaborate.
The loss of all its c hurches and of other places which
might be used as such would be a crushing blow indeed to an
American town, which habitually builds its very beginnings
around its churches as religious bulwarks for the faithful and
focal points for the entire community.
In these harrassed war years when many here are turning
naturally toward the church. it seems to us the lack of hal-
lowed ground to stand on prayerfully would be a very grave
privation to a desolate people in the very vortex of war.
Men will rebuild their churches. certainly, as soon as any
building whatever can be done in the war flattened areas.
Altars will be blessed and people will gather once more to
worship and pray. The war re-empha.siz.ed that a nation can
live well enough without many things, but not \\Othout relig-
ious freedom, without a reverent faith in God.

• • • He's an American hero. After lighting bloody battle1 in the
Paci.fie, be was home on leave two years ago.
• • •You may remember seeing his picture. His name is John
Basilone, Marine Gunnery Sergeant. He tra~eled all over Amer·
ica, urging every American to buy more bon9s.
• • •He said: ''You don't know-you can't know-how much
it means t~ the boys out th~re when they bear the fblks back
home have just put another War Bond Drive over the top."
• • • They gave him the Congressional Medal of Honor and
offered him a commission. He didn't want it. "I'm a plain soldier,"
he said. "I w.ant to stay one."
• • • Well, he stayed a plain Marine-like Joe and Bill and the
fellows down the street. He can't ask you to buy bitter bonds
during the Seventh. He was killed a few weeks ago on I wo, just
after he had led his assault team to the edge of an airfield we
needed desperately.
• • • We can't let him and all our other lighting heroes down.
Remember, last year we had two War Loan Drives by this time.
The Seventh is our personal call to arms-two drives in one.
That's why our quota is large.
• • •We must meet it-we will meet it-for the hero of lwo--
for Victory-for pride in America.
