Of that number seven were In the Navy. About one- sixth of those who got their diplomas are In the military service, but that does not be- gin to tell the real story ot Harbor High students, as lit- erally hundreds of them have gone to war in the last four years. This was the 14th class to graduate and the combined total was 1212 who have passed through Harbor's portals in the 11 or 12 years of its existence. And the trustee who gave out the parchments-Judge Donald Dodge-has been on the board all through those years. while Principal David- son has steered the ship ,throogh its myriad vicissi- tudes. Dr. James W. Fifield, Jr .. who gave the talk on "The Post War World," left quite a few startling thoughts with his audience, when he said that many changes for the better would take place when the soldiers came home; that free enterprise must prevail : that minority groups could not and must not dominate . business or employment; that real peace would have to be achieved for the little man and not for the favored few who ruled politics and government Indtlentally Dr. Fifield has established a church branch In Los An- geles that is known far and wide for Its humanitarian ap- pl'Ollch to life and living and took a decadent project and built It Into a paying Institu- tion. • :t2 V ears. Thll. pleaS1111t Theodore Robins, a trifle heavier than when he came off the flying ships In 1918, celebrated 22 years as a Ford agmt In Newport Beach on June 1. In fact, Theo. has been here 24 years, the early part being at Balboa In the garage business. Active In all dvic enterprises, with his pet Scout Troop 5 his chief concern, this soft-spoken gentleman has weathered several depressions, not be- cause they were tough, but because he attended to his business at all times. A few years ago he opened an agency at Huntington Beach where he also has the esteem of the motor public. If you can live 24 years in a small town and still have the confi- dence of the people. you can rest assured that St Peter will be in a receptive mood, If the time ever came. • Ge<>. Roetnor. It is with sadness that we chronicle the 1mtimely death of George Roetnor, who came here three years ago and by his dynamic energy built a boat company into a paying con- cern. What hastened his death was an airplane trip to Washington a few months ago when the high altitude nearly caused his demise. He neYer really recovered from 1he attack. It wouldn't be quite so bad if the lawmakers hadn't al- ready spent' many weeks in debating the issue and in testing public sentiment. 'Their rejection of the Warren and CIO plans should have settled the matter for this session at least. Now, when they have finally gotten around to tackling other serious problems such as the budget, they find that the compulsory health insurance issue is back again. -2.ts return to the legislative calendar at this late date creates the threat of a hasty and ill-conceived law should either measure be·approved at this time. What is most likely to happen is that the solons, having grown weary of the efforts of the compulsory health insur- ance group to force the matter down their legislative throats in a single gulp. will insist that a thorough-going study be made of both compulsory and voluntary plans. ·Such a study, including in it an investigation of results ob- tained in countries where compulsory health insurance is in effect, would undoubtedly make both the legislators and the people of California more convinced than ever that voluntary health insurance is by far the more desirable, and would settle the issue completely and finally. Goose-steppers We are confident that \vith Germany now beaten there will be a permanent end to the goose-step-that symbol of regimentation, that hallmark of military, dictatorial rule! It is disconcerting, however, to see how skillfully the Ger- man High Command-originator of the goose-step-is at- • tempting to perpetuate itself. It is also disturbing to hear that for 10 days after their surrender in Italy, Hitler's ar- rogant S.S. troops enjoyed virtual control of the town of Bol- zano even though our army had moved in. Local members of the Hitler youth actually goose-stepped through the streets during that time. .... But as disquieting as these conditions are, the fact is that Europe is not the only place where goose-stepping mentalities are seeking to perpetuate or extend their influence. Here in America the advocates of statism, collectivism or whatever other alias you choose for governmental control of all the people's activities, would like to see American industry and business marching in goose-step. They think it would bring a new prosperity to the nation. We have fought to rid Europe and the world of goose- stepping. Let us not tolerate it here under any guise. Keep Those Islands! Out beyond Hawaii, in the Gilbe~. the Marshalls and the Mariannas, lie the islands whose defenseless shores nearly lost this war for us at its very beginning. Stretching on west to the China Coast, south to New Guinea and north to the shores of Nippon, are other larger islands, the heart and core of Japan's aggressive campaign. Today they are being bought dearly by American boys, and paid for in blood. When this war is finished, those islands should be held by the United States. for the price is far too high to have to pay twice. Those that might be required for any future struggle against Jap conquest should be retained irrespective of wliat any other nation may think about it. And those that are owned by an Ally should be bought or negotiated for if imper- ative to such a defense. Many of the rampart islands are thoroughly worthless except for military purposes, and their aaiuJsition and control could scarcely be considered a grab for precious new territory or aggrandiienent. B.rt even if their retention by the United States were so coosldered, we believe with F1eet Admiral Ernest J. King that it Is time the U. S. abolished the policy of fighting, building and gradously giving away. Our own strategic defense sbculd be the criterion. And the cost of our misplaced trust In Japanese marvlates should be the only necessary incentive fcl' holding onto that bard-amed shield of lslands in the Pa- clftc!
