Building for Peace With the wild, cruel storm of the Pacific War finally con- trolled and quieted by men of PEACE a great task is finished. But a still greater task clamors for solution. To build-not destroy-is the challenge. To re-build, that war will not come again, is the task. The building and re-building concerns not only mor:aI and mental reconstruction which must help restore world equili- brium. but also the remodeling of our own and worldwide economy on a peacetime basis. To build demands leadership; it demands an example for others to follow. California, truly a land of a great today and a greater tomorrow ,can qualify eminently toward show· ing America and th.e world how the job can be done. To do this California must provide at least one mlllion more jobs when our servicemen return than were available in 1940. In a recent speech before the San Francisco Advertising club, a business executive pointed oot that the veterans them- selves can help create many of these jobs. He revealed that one man oot of every nine in California will soon be a vet- eran. and he urged veterans to utilize ·the 11dvantages they have earned under the G. I. Bill of Rights which affrods them substantial aid in buying or building a home, or acquiring a farm, or setting themselves up in business. He emphasized that by accepting this opportunity our.,,,,_ servicemen can benefit themselves both directly and indi- rectly for they will greatly increase California's postwar building potential and will lay the foundation for thousands of new jobs and a genuine prosperity. The war veteran of today is the~acetime leader of to- morrow. His faith in the future, his · "tiative and energy to- gether with the efforts of all of us help build a greater California of tomorrow and set an example for others to follow. Congress Caught Flatfooted We imagine that most, If not all, of our congressmen are pretty red-faced right now. If they aren't , they should be. Just a few weeks ago they calmly closed shop in Washing- ton and sallied forth for a nice vacation. The fact that they took no action on legislation that the Nation will need when it starts the full swing back to peace productioo didn't bother them at all. Now, however, the vacation days have come to an abrupt end The solons can no longer dilly dally. They've got to get .down to brass tacks.
