ftELINQUENCY. This ~ess of trying to do
smnethlng about the morals
of our 'teen-agers, is almost
·as old as Adam-we talk a
lot about It but nothing hap-
pens. We spend thousands
In seeing that our oranges are safeguarded, that . our
beaches are put in shape,
that our sanitation is pro-
tected, but when it comes to
helping the youngsters. that
Is cheerfully side-stepped
until the next meeting of our
master minds. This applies
to-professors, scientists, _edu-
cational experts and business
leaders with equal force.
Sure crime doesn't pay, and
we have the police to care
for that, but why deal in the
abstract when the lives of
our young people are .ie<>-
pa.j'dized? Dismissing the
subject on the thesis that it's
the parents' problem. is just
another way of saying that
we haven't the courage to
seek a solution!

Why Change! The war
has given us a flock . of
changes in our way of hfe.
We have been going along on
War Time and have gotten
quite used to it. Wha t's t he
matter with the way it is?
The government cut the
shirttails off our shirts, now
they want to put 'em back.
·Always seemed a damphool
thing to have them that long
and we liked the shorter
length ~vith less tucking in to
do, but now they want to
waste godd cloth for the old
style. This. of course, has
nothing to do with Paddy's
old-fashioned night shirts.
but that's another story. but
now I believe they are cut-
ting those back to what they
call night coats. which are
not half bad.

Blood Plasma. Somebody
made a crack the other day
that the blood plasma they
are giving Tojo could have
come from donors in the
"Newport Harbor area! Per-
ish the thought! But if so.
why waste good American
blood on a guy like that 7
Why fLx him up to bump him
off again. He bungled the
job just like the Stjlrting of
the war-so sorry, please!

Buster OhoweU. T h e
many friends of Bu st e r
Ohowell regret his untimely
end. Buster, who grew to
young manhood here, was al-
ways chipper and gay and
never let any of his physical
aliments affect h is outlook
on living. He worked hard
and faithfully at whatever
he did, and his tendency to
carry large sums of money
was due more to the bank
failures of a few years ago,
than any other one thing.

To Draft or Not . • ••
Congress is really o n the hot seat o n the draft question.
From on e s ide they are being urged by the parents o f 'teen-

they are being asked by families of the men serving overseas
ID do all they can to hurry them home. •
Meanwhile, the Anny insists that it needs a sizeable force

President Tnunan has taken the side of the Anny in fav-
oring a continuation of the draft, but he suggests a two-year
limH o n the time.of service. There are many indications that
congress will not go along with him. Many of the solons
have e xpressed their determination to bring compulsory mili-
tary sen.ice quickly to an e nd.

Those who favor a continuation of the draft say that suf-
ficient numbers o f men cannot be obtained through volun-
tary e nlistments. Tha t may or may not be so. It might be
tried for a few m o nths-but n ot o n the old basis. Service in
the armed forces s h ould be made more attractive through
greater opportun ity for enlisted men to rise rapidly in the
ranks. They s hould also be o ffered educational opportunities
and types o f training that would prove of value whe n they re-
turn t o civilian life. ·
All this will cost us money, b ut this a d ded expense would
be w ell wo11.b it if it eliminated the need of the draft and
helped to hasten the return of our veterans from o verseas.
China -Russia Pact
Uncle Joe Stalin h as taken a good deal of the wind out of

sincere willingness on his part to cooperate with Chiang Kai-

civil war from engulfing China.
We have long since come to the realization that the
Chungldng government is anything but truly democratic, but
with &.Y!lts faults it appears to be the best Instrument for the
establishment ln China of more tnlerable social and economic
cOOd!tions. 'There is also reason 'ID believe that under peatt-
tlme conditions many of the objectionable practices ot the
present regime will be eliminated or modified.
A stabilized China would OOlltribute enormously tn tbe PD-
