Mason Siler. Best news
yet for Mr. and Mrs. S. H.
Siler is that son Mason is due

young man who has been in
the service for some years,
will come home to again re-
sume management of lhe
Lido theater. much to the
joy of all parties concerned.
Another bit of info. is to the
effect that Bill Alford will
also be back next month, and
will officiate as Mason's side-
kick at the Lido. Bill, who
ran the Balboa show house.
has been on the Continent
for thefle many years, but his
heart has always been in the
theater business at Newport

This proposed program would cost highway users about
$75 million to SlOO million more annually than they are now
paying, and it would run their yearly tax bill close to $200
million. At six cents a gallon the tax rate would equal about
40 per cent of the cost of the gasoline itself.
Suc h taxes would present a desperate problem to Cali-
fornia's ,;1a1 highway transportation industry which ac-
counts for only 14 per cent of the vehicles on the roads but
pays 43 per cent of all automotive taxes collected by the state.

I Our American Secretary of State J ames Byrnes and the
foreign ministers of the other members of the Big Five--
Russia. Brita in. China and France-are meeting in London.
There is no fanfare, no excitement, as there was at the San
Francisco United Nations conference.
lelelJ•• I• l'f•U lt•ee.
Yet. the London meeting in many ways is more vital to
the future security of the world than the \Vorld Charter
meeting at the Golden Gate. It might be said that the San
Francisco gathering \\·as idealistic \\•hereas the London con~
ference is realistic.
True. there was a good deal of realism evident at the Unit-
ed Nations get-together. but then is was primarily a case of
ai:reeing on the rules of the game. Now comes the first test
among the Big Five, who will be the principal players,
whether or not those rules are going to be lived up to. And
therein lies the whole arl$Wer to future peace.
At Potsdam last July the foreign ministers were directed
at this meeting to draw up peace.treaties with Italy, Finland
and the Balkan countries and to settle the boundary lines for
the countries of Central and Southeastern Europe which are
now vague as a result of the war.
I J )
u
In the process of doing these things Mr. Byrnes should
use the full weight of his influence to prevent the play of
power politics and the imposition of injustices upon the small
nations of Europe which can only lead to further frictions and
eventually to another war.
BOIUZO!ftAL
I A mlnon1
Long before the Japs plunged us into the conflict we were
told by the Allies that the war in Europe was our war as weU
as theirs. That being tlie case, this is also our peace in Eur-
ope as well as theirs.
Let us see to it then that a peace is written based on sound
'moral principles, not selfish Big Power interests. And now
ls the time that we must do it-now or never.
