Big Five Conference
Our American Secretary of State James Byrnes and the
foreign ministe~ of tile other members of the Big Five--
Russia, Britain, China and France--are meeting in London.
There is no fanfare, no excitement, as there was at the San
Francisco United Nations conference.
Yet, the London meeting in many ways is more vital to
the future security of tile world than the World Charter
meeting at the Golden Gate. It might be said that tile San
Francisco gathering was idealistic whereas the London con-
ference is realistic.
True, there was a good deal of realism evident at tile Unit-
ed Nations get-together. but then is was primarily a case of
agreeing on the rules of the game. Now comes tile first test
among tile Big Five, who will be the principal players,
whether or not those rules are going to be lived up to. And
therein lies the whole answer to future peace.
At Potsdam last July the foreign ministers were directed
at this meeting to draw up peace treaties with Italy, Finland
and the Balkan countries and to settle the boundary lines for
the C01B1tries of Central and Southeastern Europe which are
now vague as a result of the war.
In the process of doing these things Mr. Byrnes should
use the full weight of his influence to prevent the play of
power politics and the Imposition of injustices upon the small
nations of Europe which can only lead l'o further frictions and
ewntually t,o another war.
Long before the J aps plunged us into the conflict we were
told by the Allies that the war in Europe was our war as well
as theirs. 'That being the case, this is also our peace in Eur-
ope as well as theirs.
Let us see to it then that a peace Is written based on sound
moral princi ples, not selfish Big Power interests. And now
is the time that we must do it-now or never.
