BOB G.\BDNEB. War's end
fDr Bob Gardner, former
(and next) dty judge, means
dvl1 oompilcatloos for a
JOl1Dg man who achieved
tame In the far Pacific and
must readjust his old view-
point to today's problems. In
tbe days when he was asso-
ciated In the law buslnes'I
with City Attorney Roland
~pson. he had a fairly
balanced method of making
a livelihood, which the war
ltnocked into a cocked hat.
As a Lieut. Commander on a
beadquaJ'tuS ship and as
chief censor for from 80 to
2 O O w a r corre$pondents,
Gardner gave a bang-up ac-
count of himself In which his
legal training stood him in
hand. That he made friends
with all those intrepid and
aggressive newspepennen is
attested in the fact that they
acclalmed him the best cen-
sor IX> ever treat them with
kindness and dispatch.
Gardner said that he met
numberless men who had en-
joyed the hospitality of New-
port-Balboa USO and that
some of them are coming
back here to live. He de-
clared that Hollywood, Chi-
cago and New York were
the three outstanding exam-
ples of USO performance
and most praised by the
boys. Honolulu was cited as
a place where civilians cared
little for war or warriors and
was a city that needed re-
form and cleanliness. He at-
tended the surrender cere-
monies on the b;lttlesh.i;i Mis-
souri and revealed that Gen-
eral MacArthur gave a dig·
n!ty and showmanship to the
world-shaking occasion that
rivalled any other epoch-
making event.
+ + +
Civlllan A,ltaln. Being a
plain, everyday Civilian is
one of the things that Naval
Officer Gardner is fondest
ot. and the sooner he can get
back in the ha rness the bet-
ter be will like it. Gone are
the easy-going days of yes-
terday; the war has put that
something in his face and
speech and character that
years of local Living could
not have done. Purposeful is
his demeanor and his return
to these shores will prove a
decided asset to the com-
munity because he brings a
knowledge of world-wide ac-
tivities that will be helpful to
any endeavor he follows.
That his sympathy is with
.the ·GI goes without saying,
and here's hoping that he
and hundi'eds more of his
buddies speedily find · their
P!'(>Per niche in their dreams
of tomorrow.

Peacetime Navy
Secretary of the Navy J ames Forrestal gave congress his
ideas of wha t our peacetime navy should be like. He sug-
gested a sea force about one-third that of our present annada
with a personnel force of half a million. In it would be in-
cluded 11 modem battleships, 15 aircraft carriers. 21 escort
carriers, 20 heavy cruisers, 29 light Cl')Jisers, 176 destroyers,
40 escort vessels and 90 submarines. In addition to this he
would keep another large number of fighting ships in reserve
which could be called up for almost instant action. They
would be manned by just enough men to keep them in top
condition. Secretary Forrestal declared that in spite of the
atom bomb there would still be a need for ships and planes to
control the seas and the skies above them. The proposed
peace time navy would cost from $3 billion to $14 billion an-
nually.

Trap forJap
One of the most interesting now-it-can-be-told stories to
come out of this war is the one in which American military
intelligence was able to break the Japanese secret code and
learn that Admiral "I-will-dictate-peace-in-the-White-House"
Yamamoto was scheduled to fly over Bougainville Island at
a certain hour on the morning ot April 18, 1943. Although
this was far~· d the enemy lines at that time. a group of
ArneriClj.Jl fig r planes led by Army Lieutenant Colonel
Thomas G. ier, Jr., set out to intercept the Admiral.
They had to fly /hundreds of miles through dangerous skies
and had to 8JT\ve at the precise spot just at the precise time.
Fortunately they were able to accomplish this feat, and quite
unfortunately for Mr. Yamamoto his plane was right on time
for his unexpected rendezvous with death. The big bombe.r
can-ying the Admiral went down in flames along with some
of the escorting Zero fighters who were protecting it. So,
Yamamoto joined his ancestors without ever finding out that
he wasn't going to get a chance to dictate peace in the White
House, anyway.
Hiroshima Results
A survey by American officials reveals that 68.000 build-
ings in Hlrosruma were destroyed or damaged. Of th°'ese 55,-
000 were totally burned. Only 10 to 20 per cent of the city's
structures remained untouched Everything within 114 miles
of the point where the atomic bomb burst was completely lev-
eled. Contrary to Jap reports, radioactivity did not con~
"measurably" after the explosion.
