The state of siege had been lifted only on August 6 of this year after being in effect since December 1941. Con- stitutional rights of free speech and assembly were suspended and the leading newspapers were shut down. Half a hundred prominent businessmen and political leaders who oppose the Farrell-Peron regime were taken litto custody. President FaJTell declared on the radio, however, that the promise of a general election before the end of the year still stands. But, a free and uncontrolled election does not appear prob&ble when - a nd if -an election is actually held. Farrell and Peron may be using the attempted revolution as an excuse to keep political opponents "out of circulation" until after a so. called election is held. More Hot Water General George S. (Blood and Guts) Patton has once again demonstrated his remarkable ability of putting not one. but both feet in his mouth every time he opens it . This time his loose talk about the necessity of keeping Nazis in office because. he said. there was no one else to replace them, brought S\\'ift and stem action from General Eisenhower \vho has let it be kno"Tl that Nazis must be cleaned out at all costs. Patton has been in charge of the Ba\·arian area of the Ameri- can occupation zone. There the German go\·ernment under his nuthorit\r \vas said to be composed of reactionaries who had been strong supporters of Hitler. It is not surprising, however . that anti-Nazis capable of taking over the reins of civilian .government are hard to find . Hitler saw to it every prominent and able individual who opposed him was put out of the way. It will take some years to rebuild a political structure in Germany that does not bear the taint of Nazism. Atom Bomb Outlook The senate approved a resolution to establish a joint con- gressional committee to study the control and use of the atomic bomb. The committre would consist of 12 members -6 from each branch of congress. At the same time. a pre- diction was made by Dr. Eugene Staley, new director of the Institute of Pacific Relations, that the power of the atomic bomb may be increased one hundred-fold within a few years. Dr. Staley also said that even though we do not share the se- cret with other nations. most of them will be able to work it out for themselves in less than a decade. He believes that either international control or outlawing of the bomb. or im- provement of international relations are the only real de- fenses against it. First Bounce California appears to be bouncing along toward the lead- ership in another industrial field, or at least toward a close runner-up position. That's in the rubber business. Facts gathered by the Wall Street Journal emphasize the tremendous war growth of synthetic rubber production in California, and the outlook is for a $70 million annual output during the next several years. That's many millions above our best pre-war figure. The nearness and abundance of petroleum resources en- ables California industry to produce synthetic rubber at low cost. If. later on. natural rubber comes into greater use. as ' is expected, California will have the advantage of being the nearest point in the United States to the principal source of na.tural rubber-the East Indies. A large port of the rubber products tlll"ned out here "ill be absorbed within the state. In fact. rubber is more vital to California than to any other state. With a pproximately 21 z million cars-half a million more than New York-and with twcrthirds of our intrastate freight being carried on mer tor vehicles. California virtually moves on rubber. \Vhat could be more logical than for this great rubber consuming state to become the greatest rubber producer? ha•e besun to travei u an o~ tumeH do not know-What they comma.nder'1 poatUon wae taken· vUton & Radio Corporation. · ltade ro.ce, much u the old same -.nt to do. but &r9 wl1llll,J "' take over by a younger man. • Amplitude modulaUon u. the Southern Counties • ..._ It _,,,. .tbere I> "° m uch to a job which wllJ Sl•e them a Uv-Amon&' the mattero upon which oyaf.etn uoed for many yean by Supp'ly' Co. blader our Pf1l8TW aJong the way, lng wqe. On "lack of understanding in the OPA" unquestionably rests much hesitancy on the part of some businessmen to launch out on the road to reronversion. In many lines, in· eluding durable g~refrigerators, washing machines, ra- dios. etc.-the OPA has unthinkingly ordered retailers to hold prices at the 1942 level-meanwhile granting to manu- facturers price increases sufficient to offset rising wages and raw materials costs.
