doubtful If you can go any-

of neighbors who could excel
those islanders in approach-

problem. They should never
have had to settle such a
question - --intelligent city
planning in the first place
would have obviated the ne-
cessity of doctors, lawyers,
engineers, artists and other
business and professional
people striving to bring or-
der out of a poorly planned
mess. Yet they are cooly
and unselfishly meeting to-
gether, · knowing that the
good of the whole island is
at stake. a11d the rights of

And. we might add, a

That's just one man's opinion, of course. But It could come -ktnir. . Behind~ Your Bonds to pass. In fact, it's not at all improbable if future growth of
the automobile population is anything like that which fol·
lowed World War I.
In the decade after 1918 passenger car registrations
leaped from about 6 million to 23 million. This not only pro-
duced a virtual revolution In passenger transport& tion
throughout the country, but with it came a vast improve-
ment in freight transportation for. In the same period, the
nation's truck fleet grew from 300.000 to more than 10 times
that number.
It was the millions of automobiles and especially the 4 '/"
million trucks, which performed so magnificently in moving
vital war tonnage, that enaWed America's transportation sys-
tem to hold up under the terrific passenger and freight bur-
den imposed by World War IL Trucks today move the bulk
of the nation's food from farms to markets and canneries,
and in California they handle two-thirds of all intrastate com-
merce.
If America does have 50 million cars in 1960 the country
should be prosperous. This would mean an annual replace-' ment production of probably 8 million cars-<louble our best
production year. This would also mean more jobs on De-
troit assembly lines, In Pittsburgh steel mills. in Akron and
California rubber plants. and in factories producing cloth,
glass, aluminum and in hundreds of other lines.
Fifty million cars can't be wrong!

PIL B. B. '801 the wolf is already here. There can be no doubt that we al-
ready have a degree of Inflation now and have had for sev·
era! years.
WeU, be that as it may, we have yet to taste of Inflation
of the ruinous type. and our only sure defense against it is to
keep surplus purchasing power out of circulation at !east until
the production of consumer gOQds reaches a volume there
won't be a wild bidding up of prices.
There's nothing new, but everything true, about this story.
For our own personal good and that of the nation we
must give full support to the Victory Bond Campaign. Our
past record has been good. The fact that Californians have
bought $2Y., billion worth of War bonds through the state's
largest bank alone speaks for itself. But we must keep it up.
It is no less pa trio tic to buy bonds now than when the
fighting still raged. And it is also a matter of enlightened
seif-interest. We're doing ourselves the most good.

The big ''blow'' will hit on the evening of October 31. And
with It will come the phenomena of wein! lights, ghostly fig·
lln!S, strange happenings, and broom, riding witches sailing
through the eerie atmosphere.
Wben the morning of November 1 dawns things will
hardly be the same as they were when dusk feU the night be-
fore. In fact, we may find that many objects which wt> have
become accustomed to seeing in certain places have· mOYed
(they Just got up and went) to the most unexpected places.
