country, the rest of us would
be appalled. but the fact that
it Is far away is much less
Impressive. In the War
Chest Drive agencies are de-
signed to use our contribu-
tions to help these people.
Those among us who are
tired of giving, and think it
Is not our responsibility,
might look at it the hard-
headed way. They are help-
ing to buy insurance-if they
do not see the humanitarian
angle -against spread of
communism throughout Eur-
ope. If millions of Poles.
Czechs, Dutch, Germans and
others go cold a nd hungry,
they may take the way of
anarchy, and then be an easy
prey to the communistic
Ideal. A few American dol-
lars from each one of us
could stave off that real
threat until'1.hey get on their
feet.

Stlrke. We at the beach
are thankful that the threat
of strikes has not touched
us, but occasionally we are
treated to a curious twist the
strike idea has taken. A lead-
ing Santa Ana newspaper
which has opposed the build-
ing of the new junior college
there. it is said. because they
object to higher education
for other than the selected
few. will be faced with a
withholding 'strike' on the
part of advertisers Monday,
the day before the election.
Difficult to believe as it is,
the stand of the paper hark-
ens back ti> other ideology
which. if carried to its logical
conclusion, would create a
super-class. Wasn't there a
'super race' fallacy disposed
of recently?

Anchorages. News that
Alamitos Bay is beginning to
dredge acres of sand to make
way for some 8400 feet of
yachting anchorages, and
the city council of Los An-
geles hall approved creation
of Playa de! Rey harbor for
a post-war project might be
worth a little reflection in
these parts. Wrangling over
pier rights and rents because
we have all the boots the
harbor can handle now could
prove to be a boomerang
When other harbors provide

In every California port last week the home-coming men
and ships of Admiral "Bull" Halsey's famous Third Fleet re-
ceived the tumultµous we lcome many of the sailormen h ad
dreamed of for years-and which Californians had dreamed
of giving them.
People thrilled a t the sight of the somber, powertul sea
fortresses-the Third Fleet champions that beat their way to
the very shores of Japan to hurl shells as well as bombs. and
teach the Jap that he was beaten before an American set foot
on Jap soil. They thrilled to Bull Halsey's message.:
"Here is my first point: During t he periods of great-
est stress and toughest going, we had utter. complete
and total unity of our forces. As one team, Army, Navy,
Marine Corps, Coast Guard-yes, and the men of the
Merchant Marine--went ahead and did an apparently
impossible job.
'"The second point is the magnificent work of the men in-
volved. In war. the human equation is one riddle you can't
solve with gadgets, gears and levers. You can't press a but-
ton and get a positive answer. But you have to depend on it
--0r you're licked ... Those ships lying in California harbors
t oday symbolize that."
Yet never, paradoxkally, has a U. S. battle fleet come
home from war more certain of victory heroically earned.
while less certain of its future standing as a ma jor factor in
the nation's armament. For there is a school of military
t hought which holds that surface navies will be rendered ob-
solete within a few years by improved atomic bombs, rockets.
and aircraft of vastlv increased speeds. range and carrying
p<l\\·er .
Somehow. though, the people got the impression that Bull
Halsey doe:;n't think the na''Y \\·ill become pa.sse, a nd some·
how the people feel the same way. It was the na\·y. they re·
member. that made the defeat of Japan pos.sible. This week's

The most obvious fact in the United States today is that
business men. laborers. farmers. politicians-all of us--are
trying to escape the natural consequences of a long and ter-
rible war. But this is not so strange perhaps as the fact that
in trying to escape these consequences, we are willing to scrap
our nation's financial integrity, our form of government, and
just about every heritage of mankind that this country pos·
sesses. The accen t is on phony ma terial security. even at the
price of personal liberty. Many public officials are more con-
cerned with measures that are politically popular at the m<>-
ment, than wi th justice or political integrity. We are shout-
ing for easy living, despite the fact that we are faced with
ruin if we do not work very hard. Labor has served notice
that it intends to increase its social gains with less work and
more pay. Again. the accen t is on personal profit above
everythi~g else. Our nation rode to the financial crest of
a \Var boom over the bodies of a million men \\'ho gave all
they had in mortal conflict for the sake of the spiritual treas-
!.ll'es of civilization, and now it proposes to stay on that easy
living crest by hook or crook.

This spectacle should bring fear to the hearts of the
thoughtful-fear for all mankind.
Makin~ Hay
"Making hay while the sun shines,' 'is an old saying that
a pplies in almost every walk of life today. Especially is it
true of reta il distributors. Now, while customers are plenti-
ful is the time to make friends. And the best way to make
friends is to give the best possible service even thlJl.lgh
swamped 'vith business. Tomorrow's suca!SSful retailer:.. are
busy storing up good \\ill to draw on in times of adversity.
Tomorrow's failures are busy ringing up sales-and making
enemies by discourteous, inefficient treatment of customer.;
who tolel'Jlte such conduct beca\Jse they have no choice at

And as sure as the sun rises and sets, those who are dig-
