Ana. have joined forces ro
return about 150 Japanese,
l!Yllcuated from this county
In 1942, to the empty bar-
racks at the county airport.
This field has just been given
up by the Western F1ying
Training command. Parti-
tions are being installed to
try to make the Japs com-
fortable.
Now these people have
just as much right in this
county as we have, since the
removal of the war emerg-
ency. However, why are
three departments of the
government so busy bringing
back former suspicious citi-
zens while veterans who
fought for their ·country
have to pitch a tent in cities
or look endlessly for hOtJS.
Ing, with no one department
providing them with ade-
quate quarters in this entire
underhoused area? The re-
location centers are being
closed in Arizona, Colorado
and other states so that
these U. S. and foreign-born
Japanese must return here
or find homes elsewhere.
What is being done for veter-
ans? It taken months to
unwind the red tape around
the bui lding of a veteran's
home under the G. I. Bill of
Rights. And children of vet-
erans are no more welcome
to landlords than any others.

Armistice Day. Election
of young veterans to take
leading posts in the local
post of the American' Le-
gion. including Don Durant
as commander. recalls the
role this highly important
organization has played in
this country. They have
sponsored many of the bene-
fits secured nationally and
locally for veterans of the
nrst world war, and have
acted as a bulwark against
infiltration of radical ele-
ments into national life.
While not enough of the
younger men have returned
and entered either the Le-
gion or another veteran's or-
ganization to mal<e their
voice articulate yet, they
may bid fair to have a con-
trolling voice in many decis-
ions made 'vithin the next
generation. Neither capital
or labor can afford to ig-
nore them. They are fiercely
patriotic and they me1111 to
see that this country is de-
fended in the future. + + •
Bonds. Maybe it takes a
little jolt to remind us that it
Is still necessary to sell bonds
to provide care for the
wounded. and even for those
not wounded. who are still in
the service and need support
of us all. A valiant young
American who led Philippine
guerillas for many months
during the darkest days of
the Pacific war recounted
the story to school children
yesterday. Without having
ro moralize. one of many to
whom we owe so much left
an indelible impression on
the minds of the youngsters,.

men for Victory bonds at

ficult to tum down a little

between producers and consumers could be put into e.ffect
by competitors with a few a dded improvements which, in
tum. kept the chains on their toes.
To consumers this means a continuance of improving dis-
tribution technique. It means maximum service and mini-
m um prices. Establish ed chains should look upon the
growth of newcomers with favor. It substantiates their con.
vlction that competition in distribution is very much alive.
It diminishes the prospect of punitive legislation against effi-
cient retailers.
The fact that there is room in the distribution industry for
all types of retailers is as true as ever, and thousands are
taking advantage of it.
Mr. Ickes in London
While in England recently, Secretary of the Interior H ar-
old L . Ickes. told a news conference, with reference to our oil
Industry. that "the United States does not contemplate con-
trol of prices or producti1m. It wants the Industry to continue
to be highly competitive." He also declared tha t the Ameri-
can oil industry will resist any attempt to nationalize it. His
comment will be appreciated in this country where the ques-
tion of government ownership of natural resource industries,
the foundation stones of all private endeavor, has been and
still is promoted. It is a question that affects all the people.
If you don't believe this, consider one small illustratipn.
Most people use gasoline. In 1932 a large oil company put
on the market what was then a superior gas. It introduced
Its new product with extensive publicity. Competitors
squirmed and looked over their laboratories for something
even better-and found it. And so it went year after year
until now, 13 years la ter , if the company that came out with
the ''mBn'el" gas of 1932 were to put it back on the market
It would be out of business overnight. Who benefited from
this progress and why? The public, of course, and CQIDpeti-
tlon was the reason. '

have seemed to be too little and too late too often.
And we've been called too many names by too many
people. But through all this hullabaloo there's one
thing of which we've made sure-that Eastside would
continue to be t..wdc:-the same grand beer you
enjoyed before Pcul Harbor.
If you think it was easy to stick to that quality
st20dard, you're cruy. How simple it would have
been to add water and add sales!
We're happy to inform you that thcn'll be more
Eastside soon. We're building and buying new equip-
ment-big shiny new copper kettles, great glus-lined
•torage tanks when: Eastside is aged Nature's way.
