HomeMy WebLinkAbout1945-11-13 - Newport Balboa News TimesSand 'Dabs • ~ L.B. M. H08PD'AL At last New- port Harbor and Costa Kem have a golden oppor- tunity. They can have their own hospital -a splendid Cass A institution backed by the American Medical fn- &tttution which < would be built -under sponsorship of the Presbyterian Churches qt Orange County, the fed- eral government, and public donations. Tiie amount of the latter Is so small-.$35,- 000 here in Newport Harbor area-that the result may be unquestioned. Santa Ana lll\d Laguna Beach are ready to contribute more, yet the · posing structure would above the bluff imme- tely west of Newport boulevard and north of Coast Highway. The serious and growing need for such an institution Is vividly shown by a case only last week-end in which a visitor had a foot broken In an auto crash near here. He waited all night to have the break set. A mass trag- edy somewhere in the area might be greatly aggravated by lack of hospital room. We must not fall to raise $35.- 000 for this puI'J>OS". Ask Lou Everding or Balboa Isl- and. He1i give you plenty of reasons for one here. . + •• Salute. \Ve haven't got 21 guns, or even one. but here's a salute nevertheless to the fishermen of NeWJ¥>rt Har- bor who go out on their own. in fair wea ther or foul, and some have a tough time get· ting back. Fishing in spite 1 of a bJo\v \Vhich makes us land-based sailors hug a fire Is something to think about, for these exponents of rug. ged individualism in any weather do not add the loss or their boats to the price of fish. Th~y are a l!>Yal , easy-go- ing, sympathetle breed who never let a fellow fisherman down, !;everal times during th11 Jlast 10 days fishermen have passed up a full night's work to help out a distressed competitor. fn that sort of livelihood there is not much ro om f o r selfishness or smallness of character. They never stop to ask why an- other fis hennan is in trouble, but help first and go on their way. • • • Planning. Maybe we don't have to wait until another dty gets an idea before adopting one, because Hunt- ington Be~ch may be a little more flush with tax money than we, but they have inau- gurated a mighty fine plan which could bear studying. 1be neighbor city has jtJst authorized negotiation with the owners of the ocean front properties for beautifi: cation of the area along the Coa$f:. Highway from Sixth to Nlpth s,treets. After long years of study by the beach and park committee of their chamber of commerce they will construct parks. cement walks. paths. ornamental lights. flowers . trees and lhrUbs in a general beautifi- cation scheme .. Entire cost al the enterprise will be bome by the municipality. ~ for 37 years the best advertisipg medium in the . nR,ort' harbor d.iatrid . Hitler Dead Officially After spending six months traveling via the "rumor route" to Patagonia, to Japan, ·ana a half dozen other places Adolf Hitler has finally gone to llis grave-officially. The s tory which Hitler's chauffeur related shortly after his arrest has now become the accepted version of what happened to the Nazi Fuhrer. The official Allied statement said that all evidence indicated that Hitler had shot h imself to death and that Eva Braun had died by taking poison on April 30, when the Russians were about to enter Berlin. Even this state- ment. however , is not likely to stop the stories that will arise as to Hitler's "escape" and the assertions that he has been "seen" in widely separated localities. In other words, der FUehrer is going ot have a long "life" even if he is dead.
