The coal industry is an excellent example. \Vithin the last generation changes have taken place in methods of op- eration tha t give the American miner a measure of security still considered impossible in other na tions. Many of these changes ha\·e been brought about because coal mining is a private industry, subject to stiff competition. The miners as private citizens can meet the O\\rTiers of the mines \\·ho are also priva te citizens. on equal ground. They can settle their differences as equals-something tflat cannot be done in the case of government-owned enterprises. Let us not thro\v a\\'ay our gains by trying to reach for too much too fast. G. I. Busines smen Some of the big businesses that will be built in this coun- try in the ne.xt fe\\' )·ears. and thousands of ~maller ent er- prises of the future. ha\'e been launched already in G~ I. imaginations in the mud of Europe, the jungles of the Orient. and on desolate_ islands of the seven seas. The G. I. wants to go into business for himself, a ccording to interviewers at public and private agencies set up to help veterans to a new start. Perhaps he's tired of taking orders from army or navy bosses-and wants no more of that in civilian life. Perhaps the self-reliance required of the fight- ing man has stimulated his confidence in himself as well as the ambition to be on his own in the wttle for a living. This is a good thing-both for the G. I. and the future of the U.S.A. Yet many a veteran has learned already that c!ry- cleaning establishment or auto. repair shop or small factory he dreamed up on Iwo Jima come to reality in Bakersfield or Pomona or Red Bluff. He is finding out that government red tape at ·home is as tangled and exasperating as the "old army way" of doing things. For aid in starting his "own business" the veteran must personally supply 50 per cent of the invested capital or get 50 per cent of the net income--and a business is "small" if it poesn't employ more than 500 persons! Seeking surplus war goods to start business. the veteran finds he comes next in line--after federal agencies and state and local governments! He gets some deserved breaks as a \'eteran. but in general he's pretty much in the same boat v.ith his civilian cousin. Your Christmas ......... ~~ all NOllTH.JilAIN iT. I He gave the follo\ving startling information : .. The carrif'rs drop- ped 6760 tons of bombfl on the Japanese mainland. The B-29'A dropped 146.899 tons.
