SAM
HOT ISS~. Two torrid
programs face some 20,-
000 people in the harbor area
_,.,.a ter and in corpora ti on or
annexation. Both are highly
controversial and decisions
may affect the future growth
of the community for the
next 25 years. The issues
are so involved and so full
of factual detail a nd opini on,
that it will and should re-
quire careful thinking to de-
term!ne which is the best
course to follow. \Ve all are
agreed that water is the life
blood of the community.
but we are not all satisfied
as to how and where it is and
\vhat to do to guarantee an
abundant supply . MWD is an
expensive procedure and its
proponents say it is the only
way: wells are not so costly
and its adherents claim there
is sufficient underground
fJo,v to give us sufficient.
Both schools of thought have
'merit. What to do! \'l'hat to
do!!

The Mesa_ Most Mesa
residents favor in corpora-

personal poll result. Only
trouble with the civic leaders
is their hesitan cy to do any-
thing about it. It's hard to
get people out to meetings
and those that come rarely
say anything, which doesn't
.fuSwer anything. Some want
drmexation to N e w po r t

than the other side. a nd ei-

lengthy legal process. In the

Equal Production
Often those who have the most. do the most kicking. Ap-
parently that is as true of nations as of individuals. The up-
r oar in this country over prices, ,,·ages. pnxluction. purchas-
ing power and living standards. ignores the ~at advantages
we enjoy.
The only possible way of measuring America's material
abundance is by citing undra matic fi~. Although our
country includes about seven per cent of the world's land
area more tha n two-thirds of the world's population, it has,
for example. been producing and using more tha n two-thirds
of the world's petroleum and the world's motor vehicles. and
consuming more than one-half of the werld's rubber supply.
Our per capita consumptidn of oil is thirty times the aver-
age of the rest of the world. The energy content of this oil is
equi\'alent to the work of forty sla\'es for every individual in
the United States-and it is in such con\·enient and concen-
trated foJm tha t no number of slaves--0r of horses--=uld
do what it does for the a\·erage Ame 1ican. particularly in
the field of transportation.
If we do not get the things tha t the optimists prophesy
in the post\\•ar era. it ,,·ill be no one's fatilt bt1t ow· O\\'Tl . The
g rea t benefit' de1i,·cd by all the people from petroleum we re
not brought abot1t sin1ply because the oi l \\·as in the ground.
They \verC' brotight abot1t lJ('cat1se thol1s;1 nds of persons
'''orked ha rrl. from 111a11::1gen1ent clo\\TI to the Jo,vliest roust-
about.
The lt-a bric fact is tl1at in the midst of our abundance, \Ve
seem to have forgotten that it did not come easily. Oil is but
one illustra tion. In proportion. as ,,.e kill incentive, 1imit pn>-
duction, and destroy profit. we \\ill lose our abundance.
Army Surplus Supplies
If you're looking for extra sheets or men's shorts you
might contact the Army. It seems that the Anny has a
"slight" surplus of such things. Senator Mead of New York
reports these Army surplus items: 30 million sheets, 116 mil-
lion pairs of shorts, 42 million pairs of wool drawers and 24
million pairs of shoes. Maybe the Army could spare one or
two of,each wit~out depleting its supply.

We're cutting
down our waiting
Right now, throughout the Pacific Coast, we
are installing thousands o f telephones. £yery
day o ur waiting list is being cut down.
Our ·rate of p rogress in completing our un·

the necessary equipment from o ur manufac-

tion to supplying out ~ace cime needs.
Stil,4 it will take some time before we can
provide service for everyo ne "·ho wano it.
Where the instrumeotirsell is all that is needed,
we are weU on our way to rake off the waiting
list all such un6Ued applicatioos. But there are
many places where we will have to build com·

Help them get h~me
lor Christmas
Molle onl~ essential trips during the holida~s
521,000 bome•bound members ol our victorious lorcea
will reach West Coast ports tbia month
The biggest g ift th~t thousands and
thousands of the men and women
in our fighting forces could get is a
chance to spend the Christmas holi·
days with the folks at home.
But getting them home is fu more
than a matter of discharge papers or
• holiday leave-there's the problem
o f getting them to wherever home is.
T eo.s of thousaods are now in Cali-
fornia ports waiting to get home.
The Army and Navy tell us that
better than a half million service per·
sonnel will be returning in December.
That means 17 ,000, on th·e average,
must be taken care of each day.
Our trains a re already O\'ercrowded..
We don't want to dis appoin t a single
soldier, sailor, marine, coast guards-
man, Wac, Wave or Spar we can pos-
sibly find space for.
So won't you help us to do our
share in playing Santa Claus to them
by postponing your trip until after the
holidays-unless it has to be made.
You'll get-we'll bet-a little glow
out of knowing that you're making it
possible fo r somebody in the service
to be home. So again we ask, in all
friend.Jine ss, won't you postpone your
trip until we can serve you in the tra..t!
