ceMd by the ~ and ~ groom-lo:be, Ma-
l'lne Major Charles Dterllne.
Bia brother, .Tolin, who flew
from Florida to be, best man,
WU .. lll!n'OUS as a cat, but delivered the young man to
the altar oo time. Rev. Wil-
liam E. Roberta, a Spanish-
.American vet, who Is com-
pleting nearly a half century
ol ministry, tied the knot In a double ring ceremony, the
bridegroom using a ring by
his grandfather. This was
the fourth wedding that day
for the prelate and at the
cicae of the ceremony he
leaned over to the groom and
asked: "Now, what do you
do?" Came the embrace.
Sure the bride looked
sweei-be had tbe looks t~
start with, and the femin-
ine part of the large audi-
ence dabbed their eyes with
111my hankies. The bride's
mother sat in solitary splen-
dor until her hubby handed
over the young woman to
the young man. Marine pho-
tographers were dashing all
over the place and it ;re-
minded one of a war-time
ablp launching at the harbor
with flash-bulbs popping
ewi-and anon. At the re-
ception the couple cut :the
cake w.ith his sword, which
be bad carried In many Pa-

Iwo Jima. There were all
!rinds of colonels and other
oftloen, all of whom came
from their base near Bar-.tow, where the young folks
will make their home. One
~:™"ed after the that it was so much
better to have a home or
church wedding than to
elope, as it was something
the-bride would remember an her life.

the floorwork and sharpshooting
of Les CXGara, noted AAU player,
who made an unscheduled appear-

WORK
Let me do my work from day to day
' In field or forest, at desk or loom;
In roaring mirket place or tranquil room
Let me but find it in my heart to say,
When vagrant wishes beckon me astray-
'"lbis is my work; my blessing, not my doom;
Of all who live, I am the one by whom
nus work can best be done in the right way."
Then shall I see it not too great, nor small,
To suit my spirit and to prove my powers;
Then shall I cheerful greet .the laboring hours
And cheerful turn,' when the long shadows fall
At eventide, to play and Jove and rest
Because I know for me my work is best.
Henry Van Dyke
Ootimism In Detroit ·
"What happens in Detroit is important to California. Rea-
son: California jlas .more cars than any other state. (As if
you didn't know).
But most of the ears still on the hoof in this Golden State
are getting pretty footsore from their long serace without
being honorably retired to the junk pile. What they and their
owners want ot know is, when are new cars-a lot of them
-going to be available so that most of those still gasping
along the highway$ (the cars, not the owners) can be re-
leased from active duty.
Well, the word coming from Detroit is that auto manu-
facturers are getting more optimistic about the prospects of
catching up somewhat on the tremendous backlog of orders
still clogging their books. The i!Jdustrial front has been
peaceful but active in the last two months and if no new la-
bor wars develop Detroit should be bouncing new cars off the
production line with real old fashioned speed before long.
All of which means that the motor parade westward
should increase substantially in the near future. Certainly
there are enough persoM in California· who not only wish
to buy cars but who are financially able to buy them to ac-
count for no small part of the Detroit output. A great many
individuals have saved enough to pay cash for their new
cars, and there.are plenty who will use low-cost bank credit
to finance new •·1to purchases. In fact, one of the big rea-
sons why Califvmia ha,s so"·many cars is that for years the
banks in this state have kept the cost of automobile financing
at a minimum. ,
At any rate, the prospects of new machines to replace
some of the traveling junk on the highway will be good news
to owners of old cars-and to their cars-and to the other
motorists who have to dodge those cars.
Sports "Fixing" .
The extent ·t~ which the boys who like to bet on a "sure
thing" have maalf~ds into the sports picture is something
which is causing filns all over the country deep concern.
The Graziano bribe story--0ne of the biggest bombshells
In ring history-together with the recent attempted brib-
ing of two professional football players and last year's brib-
ery of seve~ outstanding basketba)l players in New York
show tha t something pretty drastic must be done to put a
halt to this sort of thing.
The American people are great love~ of sports of all
kinds. Sports events on the whole constitute a huge business.
Thousands of persons earn their living directly and indirectly
from them. Right now we are in the ,midst of a second
"golden age" i>f sports comparable to the one which followed
World War I.
But our whole sports setup will face ~rious impairment if
· sports f~ know that 99 per cent plus of the athletes in-
volved in professional and amateur ·games are on the level.
Unless, however. garmblers can be prevented from tempting
the fraction of one per cent who can't resist bribes public con-
fidence will be weakened.
This may reqµire more severe penalties agaihst "fixers"
·than now exist. But whatever is needed to do it should be
done--and. quick!
