It is ablorbing I :_, ......._ ___ W, ~t a picture of the JlllllllCW status of Newport Beech,, at least of Its lnhabi· tanta. What promoted the curiosity was attendance at a meeting last week of 'the Newport Balboa Feder a I Savings and Loan Assn., wherein I learned that thla bome loaning o~tlon bad passed the thiee-mlllion mark In resources, exact fig- ures being $3,283,333. Then we learned that deposits and resources of the two branches of the Bank of Am· erica were nearly $11,000,· 000. You can confidently add --another million of money deposited elsewhere, which gives cash owned by local people of some $15,000,000. Assessed value of property runs more than $17,000,000 for the city, so it is apparent that local cltirens are in pretty good' finaJlcial stand- ing, not an unpleasant feel- ing to contemplate. To drift back to the Sav- ings and Loan grou[>-its Joans, as of March 1. totalled $2,806.703, while lOaJjs in process were nearly $850,- 000, the bulk of them being in residential holdings. Presi- dent P. A. Palmer, just home from conventions in Kansas City and San Francisco, re- ports that the concensus of opinion of the delegates looked for at least five years of continued prosperity. An interesting observation was that · building in the middle west mn about ten dollars a square foot, which compares with California better-class building, although some con- tractors and supply men inti- mate that is a bit low for this section, unless it be on a mass production scale. + + + Publicity. That was a rather one-sided m eet in g held recently by a self-styled "Central Publicity commit- tee." This group has a happy Idea of trying to control publicity that arises in this area-at least the adverse kind, in onJer to checkmate the reported boycott of some collegiate youth, who say they are irked over the re- strictive measures put on their frolicsome activities, espec ially during Easter weels.~e reason it was one- sicled is that no newspaper- man 11 ttended. + + + WID 'Keep Faith. That was a hopeful statement of GOP Chairman Carroll Reece to the effect that his party will keep faith with the voters. But it sems to take e'm a darn long time to get -going. At it for several months',and what with fight- . Ing over the budget and la- • bor, etc., they seem to be • just marking time. One solon says the budget. can be cut five billion ; the man who perfected the pay-as-you-go tax plan claims eight billion could be slashed and still give u_s a 20 % chop in in- come taxes. One good plan would be to make federal employes really work at their jobs and the way to do !hat is reduce personnel and tell the bureaucrats to get along with .so much help or else. • + • + Blgbways. The governor seems a mite peeved over the efforts of the oil men to hold down on the highWa.y bill's program. 'S'funny but why have they not as much right to present a plan as the chief executive? Sure they do theirs by an advertising cam- . while Mr. WIUTE!I gets ~blidty "for free" be- cause he's governor. It Is juit as logical to wait a year ana see If prices ol road building """"' down, as it Is to slap a · 4-or 5-eent gas tax on to be llpent OYer a period ol )'Mrs and aillected now.
