modore' B. F. J\1oler. commandant,
doe!'! not plan to build barracks
on the scout base.
"\Ve just v.·anl to havC' the

recently to ask that this clause
lX' stricken out."
Queried AS to ho''' many young
men a rt'.' enrolled Crom the city
of Nev.wrt &-ach in the Sea Scout
troop her(', Commodore Mole r
stated that ther!' \\"er e 24 members
from the Ne"-port Harbor district,
fi\'e from Nc\\l)()rt Beach and the
rest from Costa f\1esa.
"Boys who live near the "'ater
do not seem to take much inter-
C'Sl in Sea Scouting. so most of our
membership comes from lnland
to"'ns," said ·f\1r. Moler. "We are
not a charity group, and we feel
that we are a character building
organization and as such should
receive the endorsement o f our
public officials."
loioler was disappointed in the
recent action taken by the New-
port Beach city council.
B-.e U111uJtable
Though no decisive action was
taken by the council as a whole,
members. including 1'1ayor Reed,
who is chairman of the city's board
of trustees, expressed the thought
that perhaps tht? Sea Scout or-
ganization could find a more suit-
able spot for their activities.
~1:ayor Ret"d explained lha t the
land which is.now the site of the
Sea Scout camp is valued at $11 ,-
000. Thero seemed to be a n infer-
ence that the land could be utiliz-
ed for some purpose other than
"'hat it is now bei.ng used for, as
a Sea Scout base.
Re presentatives of the Orange
Empire Scout Council who attend-
ed the council session also asked
that their present lease be extend-
ed to cover the period from 1962
to 1972.
Members of the city council did
not look with favor on such a
proposal. Some stated frankly that
the Sea Scout command failed to
carry out a plan to build hand-
some-looking headquarters with
bulkheads at the Coast highway
site.
F ean St ttl Lou
Commodore Moler commen ted
briefly on this.
"We were unable to carry out
our plans before d ue to the short-
age of building materials, but now
we have received word from the
Navy department that we may
have some surplus s teel at cost.
and we want to buy this and co
ahead with our plans."
However, If the city council
continues ·to react in the matter
that It did at the last meeting,
Commodore Moler feels that the
Sea Scout t:Q;JUMnd will lose the
ch.-to b<ly the steel from the
Navy at the present C08t price.
"If that happens." Moler added.
"We will not be able to ao ahead
with our bulld!na planl."

DirectOF Ointon Sawin had
chosen a difficult program but his
conducting showed a complete un-

The opening number was the

Bach's Pz'elude, Chorale and Fugue
was next and then came the very
lovely Concerto Grosso (Christ-

Virginia Seal on the cello and Miss
Anne Metzak on the violin, car-

O'osing number was the Em-

Much interest 1 has been shown
in next season's concerts, for
which Director Sawin has exten-

musicians in the county to enroll
in this group which already has 54
members from all over the county.
