M.UOIUTIE8. Where else
in tbe world can you find
a natioo or C0W1try .that can
call its ruler a liar and get
away with it than in these
United States? Referring, of
course, to President Tru-
man's veto labor remarks
and its authors, Taft and
Hartley, denouncing him as
a prevaricator, visionary,
one-sided and opposing the
majority. If this happened
In a totalitarian state the op-
position would loog ere this
have been hustled off to
.Prison or they would just dis-
appear. Sentiment on the
tax veto was more evenly
divided than on the labor
veto, which had a clear ma·
jority in congress and
seemed to be opposed more
by union chieftains than by
the rank and file. As in
every other powerful organi-
zation a few thugs and rough
necks cast the odium on the
vast, silent majority, while
the leaders usurp their au-
thority and believe their fol-
lowers all endorse their
methods.

In reflecting on the pro-
visions of the Wagner Act
and the claim that the New
Deal was responsible, it
should be remembenid that
everything Roosevelt finish·
was started under Republi-
can administrations, such as
the R.F.C., the first half-
billion farm relief bill, ex-
panding feredal bureaus,
commissions and regulations,
ordering business men to
give employes a flat ten per-
cent wage increase, destroy-
ing food to create artificial
prices for same and the
graduated income tax. What
party was it that established
the old communist slogan,
''From every man. accord-
ing to his capacity. To
every man according to his
need." And the greatest
Democrat of all time repeat-
edly warned: "That govern-
ment is best which governs
least." All of which means
we must get back to basic
principles if we are to con-
tinue as a republic.

is already underway. Mayor
Reed, Bob Allen and Mason
Siler are three councilmen
whose tenns will expire and
'tis said Reed and Allen
would like to run again and
that Slier would not. All
three will keep their ears to
the listening posts to see
what the Zodiac has to tell
them.· That there will be a
large group seeking the fa-

Roger Watson. Nelson Staf-

a receptive mood. And there

Jurors Inspect Boat
Beulah Louise Overell an d
George "Bud" Collum stood by the
battered hull ot the Mary E. th.iS
morning in South Coast yards and
watched the jurors as they were
shown over the boat by Presiding
Judge Kenneth Morrison and Hub--

company.
No details of the crime for
which Louise Overell and Collum
are charged, the murder of he
girl's parents on board the yacht
on the night of March 15, were
told the jurors but they were made
familiar with the interior arrange-
ment of the boat. Outside it
shows little damage, except for the
gaping hole in the side, but inside
it is a shambles.
When first brought in, Louise
did not look at the boat but kept
her eyes turned in the direction of
the street. There were black
circles around her eyes and later,
in the car, she shed tears. Bud

Why Not a Coast Judge?
(F.ditorial)
Without any intent to show partiality The News-
Times believes the coast line of Orange county is en-
titled to representation on the Superior court bench, and
with that thought in mind presents the name of City
Judge Robert Gardner to the serious consideration of
Governor Earl Warren.

In 3 Suits
To those who have failed to read that the state legis-
lature gave Orange county another jurist and that it is
"up to" Governor Warren to make the appointment to
serve until the next regular election, we urge the hun-
dreds of friends of Judge Gardner to enter the lists in
his behalf.
"Bob" Gardner. a resident of Balboa Island, has
been city judge since 1939, with time out for his stint
in the U. S. Navy, where he served on the staffs of such
warriors as Admiral Nimitz, Admiral Hoover and Ad-·
mira1 Turner, for all of whom he did a splendid job. On
his return to civil life he picked up its threads as calmly
and capably as he did before he went to war.
Judge Gardner has been practicing law for many
years-in the offices of Roland Thompson and Don Har-
wood, Santa Ana. and of late partner of the latter, while
doing a fine piece of work as city judge of Newport
Beach, a post he handles "'!th fairness and dignity and
with a minimum of complaints.
At present Orange county has three superior court
judges. one from the northern end of the county and
two from Santa Ana. The coast line, with its tremendous
growth and complex problems having to do "'.ith mari~e
and shoreline affairs, so different from agnculture, 1s
entitled to able and competent representation. Judge
Gardner is qualified in every way for the judgeship.

Coast Guard Studies Plan
To End Pt. Arguello Buoy
LONG BEACH -The Coast

ot disestablishing the 13-yearlold
Point Pedernales lighted whistle
buoy, located near Point Arguello
in the Eleventh Coast Guard Dis-
trict, on the grounds that it is
no lo nger necessary as an aid to
navigation.
The buoy. located near the spot
where several vessels have round·
ered on t h i s ~rocky, California
coast in years past, is now non·
essential, the Coast Guard feels,
because of im-provements made in
the light and sound signals of the
Poi nt Arguello Light Station, two
miles away. Removal of the buoy
is in the interests of economy.
l n a notice to all mariners dated
13 June, Commodore L. L. Ben·
nett, Commander of the Eleventh
Coast Guard District, stated:
a lighted whistle buoy off P oint
Pedem aJes no longer exists, a nd
unless reasons are found justify.
Ing the continuance of this buoy,
it is proposed to remove and dis-
continue same.
"T herefore, mariners and other
in terested parties are requested
to communicate with this office
in the event they feel" that the
continuance of this buoy is re-
quired and is useful to them in
their coastal navigation.
"In submitting reasons for con·
tinuance it will be appreciated if
the manner in which this buoy
is utilized and the frequency ot
such use is stated in writing. Ad·

However, the police chief didn't
beam with delight when the coun-
cilmen amended their motion to
authorize the police commander to
be up at six a.m. to decide whether
or not the vehicle is to noisy for
