NEWSPAPERS. Oct. 1-8,
"National Newspaper
Week" will be observed and
the sloglin is "'Your Newspa-
per Serves Freedom by Serv-
ing You". According to Web-
ster Freedom means "exemi>-
tion or liberation from the
power and control of anoth-
er-<?xemption from neces-
sity in choice ·and action."
And President Truman in
commenting on the subject
says: ''We are too much in-
clined to take our own free-
dom as ·a matter of course.
We need to defend it always,
and we ·need now to do all
that we can to extend t he
blessin g of freedom
throughoot the world." Tha t
freedom of expression which
is the heritage of every Am-
erican newspaper, is priceless
when we know its suppres-
sion in Russia. parts of Eu-
rope and South America
means starvation, dictator-
ship and subjugation of the
masses, who must fi ght the
wars for their masters. Wa l-
ter Winchell's broadcast
Sunday night in answer to
the Soviet leaders· attacks on
tlie U. S. should be printed

Cole, whose congenial personality and r e a d y
hand-clasp have made a host of friends for Newport
Harbor, is a man of long and vari ed business exper-
ience. His contracts reach to Florida. and north to
Chicago and Duluth and in the inland lake cities.
The respect he commanded is best evidenced in the
fact that, had he chose to remain at Port Orange
for another seaso n, he would have been in line for
the presidency of the Sportfish ing Association.

Is vital. "We in the New-

"are also seriously concerned
over the prospects. Local de-

Food Waste. The president
urges his fellow citizens to
cut out waste in order to
, save food . He knows that
most of the waste comes
from the food thrown out by
t he wealthy families of the
U. S.. including the grub
from the White House table.
He a lso understands that the
great middle class and those
poorer'. throw mighty little
food into the garbage pail:
tha t the l eftovers a r e
warmed over or made into
edible meals. but that the
rich folks give no heed to
such tactics. Why not put
your finger on the real wast-
ers? '

IDgh Prices. And now we
come to some reasons for
high prices. An item says:
"U. S. buys dried fruit to
keep prices up" a nd assure a
"reasonable" return to Cali-.

one secti on or the population,
but what about the millions

etc. at prices they can af-
ford• lf prices are to come
down, a start must be made
some\vhere. even if one sec-
