WORLD WAR ill
-What Can We Do to Prevent It?
Is there an actual War Party in America! If
90, for what signs and s.i~als should we be
alert! There are many things that the Amer-

their representatives in Washington, can do to
stop such a program. Mr. deLlma puts the
situation under a crystl light; making us squirm
a little, but also making us resolve to know

W e are authors writing a history. OUr material comes from
deeds of mercy, kindness, and encouragemen t we give to those
we meet. To guide the footsteps o( a child, bring a smile to a

The wealth of this world is not in golden bars in some dark

. Most people are lazy, just
like the writer of this substi-
·tute column today. A sure
sigh of laziness is being late
to meetings and appoint-
ments. I have seldom been
to a meeting in Newport
Beach where at least half the
people were not la te-Rotary
dlab excepted. About the
only treatment for being lazy
and putting things off that I
know of is to keep reminding
yourself to be p r o m p t
through the use of quota-
tions, such as, "Procrastina-
ti on is the thief of time."
Tha t particular quotation is
rather weak, in my opinion,
however. I prefer the one
"Do not put off until this
afternoon that which you
can do this morning."

Am advised by penny post-
card that there is going to be
a meeting of the folks who
are against making China
Cove into a public beach.
They object on the grounds-
that it is an "unfa ir assess-
ment and tax." A pal of
mine. the Hermit of Buck
Gully who is reported to live
in a cave in the hills back of
Corona del Mar. has this to
say on the subject: "These
I guys are willing to let the
beaches be destroyed if it
will save them some tax
money. Now the beaches add
to the charm and character
of our community. The
charm and character are
what create high real estate
values. High real estate val-
ues bring high assessed val-
uations. 'The higher the val-
uation the higher the tax.
Therefore, if the charm and
character of the community
can be destroyed, valuations
w;lll IP l>rought down, and
taxes deCreased as a result"
