r.BERT C. RUARK, the
Scripps-Howard column-
ist, has let out a blast
against stat~ bonuses for vet-
erans such as the $400 mil-
lion voted by the people of
New York.
Now, Mr. Ruark h as
learned that a writer can
make more of a name for
himsell-8.l'ld more money-
by being disagreeable in an
interesting way. George Ber-
nard Shaw learned that
years ago and it has helped
him to make at least two
things of him.sell : a wealthy
man and a perpetual grouch.
But to get· back to Mr.
RuMk. Since he returned
from the war he has found
fault with a good many
things including American
women. Southern cooking
and General John "Court-
house" Lee. 'From this it
would appear that he is de-
veloping a Shavian disposi-
tion.
Of Ruark's latest com-
plaint. however , it must be
said that it is thought pro-
voking, or, to some persons.
m aybe just provoking. He
says that if bonuses are to
be handed out to the ex-G.I.'s
then the gravy train should
include the wives and child-
ren of the men who didn't
come back, the girls who
didn•t get married and the
ones \vho got divorces, and
the girls who wound up on
the wrong side of town from
eauses stemming from the
war.
He also feels that the 4-F's
who were willing but unable
to go sh ould get their share
for the chagrin they experi-
ence<!. that the butcher a nd
baker have something com-
ing for what they went
through, and that even the
slackers should be compen-
sated for the ignominy of
having their yellow streaks
made known to the public.
Well. maybe the need then
is not for fewer bonuses but
bigger and better ones that
will give each citizen a re-
ward for having been alive
when the '''a r \\1as on.

In conformity with the Proclamaa
Uon by the Preaident of the United
States, at 11 o'clock Thunclay
morning, November '17, Lido Thea ..
tre, Via Udo and Central avenue.
There are persor11 who constant-
ly clamor. They complain of op.-
preuion, speculation, and pernic-
ious"'influence of wealth. They cry
out loudly against all banks and
corporations, and a means by
which small capitalists become
united in order to produce im-

They carry on a mad hostility
again&t all established institutions.
They would choke the fountain of
