Al Spencer, genen&simo of the
Newport Harbor Area· Boys' club
at Coata Mesa, ls atUl doing a
phenominal job.
Every now and
then we feel we
must do a ool-
\1rnn OD Spencer'•
happy little fam-
ily because It is
ju.at that . . .
happy.
Each time we
see Al we u
him "What ·
your a vera&
dally attend.an
now?" and each time the answer
ls greater than the previous J.hne.
It ls impossible to see how Al
keeps over 115 boys a day happy
with so little room----and they
must be happy tor they come back
day after day.
Of course, as we have stated
before, ln that lltUe space et the
comer of Anaheim and Balboa
et:reetl there are many, many ac-
tivt tie1 carefully planned by Spen-
cer who. ju.at aeems to have that
certain tquch to make the club
a success.
Latest edditJon is a cla.sa ln box-
ing which was going on aa we
dropped in laat night. Irwin
.. SRt~e~ a guy .VVh.Q ~ what the ooys club Is doin1, ii conducttng
the instruction period each Mon-
day night. Sprague will not only
teach the boys the fundamentals
of boxing, but will give them some
practical ~xpertcnoe.
Saturday the first three of the
six basketball teams went into
ectlon at Los Angeles a1alnst the
All Nation'• club in first round
play of t.he annual Southern Cali-
fornia Boys' club championships.
The Eees won 42-13 while the
Dees lost. The F team won by for-
f eit. Next Saturday the Los Ange-
le. All Nation's club comes to the
Harbor h1gh gym with thelr Var-
sity and Bee team& to play the
local A and Bee club teams. The
local Cees wUl win by forfeit be-
cause the Los Angeles club does
no have enouah Interest In mem-
bera to field a team in t.hiJ dl-
vialon.
It is an indirect feather in the
caps of Spencer and assistant,
Bob Bennett. who have made the
lQC&l club so inteTesting that theTe
le more than eno~h interest to
field learns in all 11x dlviaion&-
and good teams, too.

Friday night the Chaffey-Mt.
San Antonio game waa officially
declared a tie after both tea.ms
bad gone to the showers. A check
of the soorebooks revealed that
the score was 47-47 Instead ot 47-
46 as indicated in both Chaffey's
home book and on the scoreboard.
The game will be played off later.
The scorekeeper's job is under
emphasized in both college and
hJgh school. The coaches, too oft-
en plclt a boy wJthout experience
to keep the books. At Orange the
other night, the officlal (home
scorers are regarded aa official> acorekeeper was an underclass-
man who had only kept score two
other times--both last year. He
didn't know how many fouls were
allowed each pJayer, he didn't
know how many t.itne-outs were
allowed-in fact the only thing he
knew how to do was put an X aft-
er a player's name if he made a
field goal. Actually he was one
of the better scorekeepers we
have seen this year. In the open-
ing game at Anaheim, the home
scorer marked Bill J ackson's first
two n eld goals with a circled X
which indicates one point for a
free-throw-yet a mlscue Uke that
may mean the game for a team.

Mr. Beelrln Sacramento and read
before the audience at the Balboa

'The question of wbether the
city of Nweport Beach bu ar-

quires a charter; and the tu:rther
question. whether the lAterMla of

'The voteni of the city went to

of outatandln& ability, extmslve experience. and unquestioned pro-
