March 22, 1949 .- Tuesday, MaKb 22, 1949 Last Thuraday we ventured on that well known limb and picked an All Southern California high school basketball team. Today the Helms Athletic Foundation in co- orration of several sports editors o the Southland (not us) an- nounced the of!ieial Southern Cal Prep all star team. The Helms team listed four of our Cirst string picks on the first team and the fifth man, Newport Harbors Bob Yardley on the second team. With the selections now official, we still feel that Yardley ls a first string all C.I .F . player. The Helms board changed I ts ways of picking this year. Up until now they have always listed three strings ot five players each -this season they listed two teams of 10 players each. Of the 20 players listed an the official all star ~am. we selected eight of them on our teams-which isn't bad in this world of a million all ltar t.eams. There were 171 high IChool teams to take into con- lidera tlon which if you apply a few mathematics means that the all c.LF. teams were picked from over 800 players. Of our picks, seven w ere not recognized by the selection com- mittee Including Tom Shaheen of St. Anthony's, Ronald Bane of Alhambra, Charles Dunne of Ven- tura, Ronald Bartholomew of Loloya, Dick Utter of Ventura. Tony Melton of Compton and Benny Loree of B r e a Olinda. Lorea was left off t he team in favor of Santa Ana's Donn Moo- maw-! 'J:'he board picked Ventura's BW Freeman over tcarnma tcs Utter and Dunne although both were better shots. Freeman impressed thls writer only rnildJy ln the three times we saw him. He ap- peared to be clumsey and could be atop p e d without too much trouble under the bucket. Yardley and the rest of the two teams will be honored Satur- day morning, April 2 at Helm.a Athletic Foundation. wtmmlnc at Harbor Thunday attunoon, Newport Harbor wUJ launch Its first or - ianized awtm team. A n d for fun, el v e Brownies. They make more mental turmoil than boys. but they don't muss up the house u much. And oh, how cute. Espe- cially when they're 1tnlfng. In the afternoon. a Parent Educa- tion class, and in the evenin& a concert. Going to a concert in- volves pressing that new tnme awt, doing something about 10x and shirts for Ole gentlmien, anrt having dinner ready on Ume. No wond~ I wear my halr all wt1py- doodle, Uke something that hap- pened to blow over from acrou the street. PATTERNS -One thing the Parent Education teacher aald la.at week was that Home should provide patterns for conduct. And right ahe ls-pattems, with dlrections for cutting out. and pinning, and sewing. Not that tl.ssure paper that most patterns are made of. either-but some good soltd stuff that can stand wear and tear. Not patterns foT something k.ippy to wear out dancing. but every-da» aort of garmenta, with honesty for the trlmmin~. and courtesy for the piplng-and charm for a nower In the buttonhole. All nicely em- broidered with good will toward men, too. BACK TO THE BROWNIES - But going back to Brownles Evelyn asked them what the word God meant. One saJd, "Be- lng kJnd to people." Another of- fered. "Doing what you're 1up- p()Sed to do." Shirley wu crawl- ing around on her 1tomach, but ~he stopped long enoygh to 1ay, God makes other children ao we can have people to play with." Then she crawled under the piano. So they asked, "Are you 90, too?" They thought it was the most wonder- ful joke. I was decent about it. but J must say lt didn't seem IO darn funny. You know, we knew a woman once who was 30 tor 10 years. I was telling Bill about her the other day, and he aaid, "Who did she think she was kiddlng7" Well, I don't know -It was kind of cute. Every body knew she wu fibbing. In fact. she didn't really try to make It stick-She juat looked wlae and said U. It made talk at parties. and lots of people no- Uced her who never would have otherwise. In fact. it did quite a bit for her socially. Maybe if life Is dull, a little fairy tale can do wonders for it. Did for her , anyway. PERFECTLY CHEERFUL-In a perfectly cheerful way, I was thinking about ciylng this morn-ina. And I aaJd to myself, "Oh. null. It just doesn't happen." I can see Jllchn.rd on aome future day telling hll children about Grandma. "She had a big nose and 11 quick temper," he'll say. "She loved music. and chill sauce. dogs, blrd.s, horses, cats, and peo- ple." Then maybe once In a while. when he and Charles are old men. Charles will say, ''Re- member how I used to chase your mother around the house, growling at her?" And they'll laugh unUJ thclr falae teeth fall out AA long es things like that happen, well-I may be buried, but I won't be dead. Today's Markets ca--. ftcurn. Re90l't of Leater A Co.. Mbr. LA tk.
