Art gaUery is one of those subllc
memories of France painted by
the Baroness Lucinne de St. l\1art.
the 85 year old. French woman
who. la.st year changt'd her style
of painting after a lifetime as
an artist.
Lucienne's small and channing
"Picnic," a primitive with a defi-
nitely French flavor showing a
nostalgic scene of children picnlck·
ing ln a sunlit field. immediately
catches the eye. Several new
paintings by Lucinne were ex·
hlblted at th@ Art FestJvaJ this
year and 5he also had a one--w~
man exhibit in December at the
O!.abot Art gallery.
Of the exhibition Fern Gary,
curator, notes that it is always
interesting to see what work! a

a show of this type when he does
floral still lif£'s, \\ith some por·
traits and str<'f't scenes.
The< one abstract painting in
the ~h o \\', "Sea Ha rvest," by
Georg<' 1-(. OrO\\-O, is excellent. The
marinb forms used have been ar·
range~ in an entertaining pattern
and the whole is executed in bold
rolor.
\Vade Zint's "Girl in Pink" is
also ~ picture that must be m(>n·
tioned. The fresh. direct way in
whlc~ the quilt~ pink satin coat
is painted is especially intert'St·
ing.
"Victorian Santa Ana" by the San t~ Ana artist , Elizabeth
Winkle. is' a portrait of one of
Sant& Ana's old homes and is
one br the outstanding pictures
in t.He shov.'. It is a colorful water
color with nice compostt.ion. An·

JANE WYMAN, Academy A-
ward winner for her outstanding
performance in "JOHNNY BE-
UNDA." told me not so long ago
when we chatted on the set of
'"A KISS IN THE DARK," that
there's something wrong with gals
who take more than 20 minutes
to dreu.
Jane brands as dist,inctly an
old-fashioned American type the
fiddling dresser who keeps her
date cooling his heels while she
ponders what to wear that night.
''This is the era of 'the career
gtrl' who is used to getting things
done cooly, quickly and effi-
ciently," the star said. '.'And that
takes in dress. as well.
"A girl can't keep her boss
\\•ailing while she contemplateg
what s he'll wear to the office.
Why should she expect it of her
boy-friends?"
"A girl must be a complete
bird.bra.in if she hasn't studied her
personality to know exactly what
styles on her are becoming or
unbecoming." J a n e oontinued.
"And she displays not only thor·
ough lack of poise and unsure-
ness but downright rudeness if.
with this ldlowledge, she still feels
called upon to . take an hour to
dress while her escort whiles the
time trying to make conversation
with pa and ma. A man can get
tired. of waiting and walk out of
her life." ·
The wont type of fiddling
dresser. thinks Mi.ss Wyman, is
the one who waits until the door-
bell rings before she begins to
dress.
"A girl like that doesn"t de-
serve to have a beau." she de-
clar<d.
It's the star's contention that
a female shouldn't t a k e tonger
than 20 minutes to dress and "put
on her face."
"If you know what's good tor
you and on you, that's all the time
you need." she said.
Jane, herself. ls condJtionel to
dressing quickly.
"All actreues are." she said.
But a girl who pkeeP! a man
waiting while she dithers with
her dressing may one day be Jett
"'1th all the time in the world
on her hands.
"No ,man likes lt," Miss Wyman
concluded.

Over at Eddie Groenendyke's
Union Oil dock is a specimen of
the n_ew weapon. cradled with its
tank and Oexible connection on a
light, tubular tw~wheeled dolly.
The gun its(>lf, resembles a
tommygun, and is smooth, a.11
metal and shiny. It appears to be
built (excellent workmanship) of
dural. It i.s patented and built by
the St. Louia Bearing Co., of WlJ-
mington, Cal. The harpoon, of
some 15 Inches in length is of
bronze, iU flukes laying fiat along-
side its barrel in flight, then open·
lng outwards on hinges when It
ls "set" in the fb:b. The flukes
ahould not pull out. The bot tom
h&lf of the harpoon is set ln a
"wooden handJ,e" on the end of
which is a leather washer. ThJ.s,
with the line outside the rttJe,.
is twisted gently tnto the barrel '
which ls of smooth bore and 1"
inches in diameter.
The tank at the end of the
flexible hose (some 6 ft.) bi 10
by 15 inchn and ls charged with
C 0..2 at 800 pounds per square
Inch. \Vh('n being put to use the
gun ls charged from the tank and
used at (single-shot) will. There
is no detonation :u such, but there
is quite an air concussion. The
harpoon and line will travel 85
feet in a flat trajectory. and 150
feet when lifted up In elevation.
The piece l.s fired from a standing
pasition. The tank, refilled ·at a
nomJnaJ cost. will flre from 120
to 500 charges.
We undentand there ls no Jaw
against the use of this gun, but
a "sportfisherman" would have to
have considerable temerity to Oy
one of his flags after gaffing a
fish harpooned with such a wea-
pon. Naturally, the Balboa Angl-
