' 'Cracked' Films· via Broadway
Screen stars, it seems, "crack" Hollywood via the Broadway route.
All that's required is a single Broadway hit and you can write your own ticket in
Hollywood. Anyway, Pat Neal did-and now she's on her sixth film at Warner's, Hem-
ingway's ''The Breai<lng ?olnt" being fi.lmcd in Newport Beach.
She plays the part of "an adventuress." one of the lead roles, with John Garfield
and Phyllis Thaxter in the other two major roles.

WELCH'S
A student working his way 'through college wanted
to spend the summer at Balboa, but he needed a job.
Observing the building activities, he knocked at Mr.
Boatwick's door early one morning and made applica-
tion for work. Mr. Boatwick· siud him up and aa.id, "I
don't know whether we can use you or not. We have
nil the common labor we need. We need carpenters. We
pay two dollars a day for common labor, two-fifty for
carpenters and three for expert carpenters, but they've
got to have their tools."
Obviously, the way to get a job was to be a car·
penter, and to have some tools. Repairing to the house
of kindly !'lllatlves who were lending him their cottage,
the student ransacked the place. He found a hammer,
rip saw, but for some strange reason no Cl"Oll8-CUt, a
hand ax and sundry other tools. He needed a Cl'Oll&<Ut
saw, a plane, a brace and some bits, so he crossed the
bay and viSited Way and Driggers general store, which
at that time wu situated on Palm Street at the •J><>t
where a Ferria Wheel entertain& visitors at the Fan
Zone. Pouring out his problem into the kindly ears of
Charley Way, he proceeded to select from the stock on
display the items he felt he needed to qualify him for
the job as carpenter. With the itema listed on a ll&le8
slip, it appeared that it wu going to coat $12.50 to
become a carpenter. AB he gathered up the purchasea

know rm going to get the money?"
"Why, dldn'.t I jUlt tell you that rd eettle with you
when I got my flnt pay?" said the student
"Oh, so you did," aald Charley, as If that settled
the matter. '
