An important contest ill being conducted by the
American Press, a publication devoted to the affairs of
co untry newspapers. Tbe purpose of the contest is to
get • out · the • vofe. t:articipants are rural newspapers.
Awards will be given to thooe weekly newspapers, semi·
weekly and tri-weekly newspapers which, in the opinion
of competent judges, do the most between now and No-
vember 7 to stimulate voting in their communities.
The editors of American Press have undertAken a fine
project. It is gratifying to note that the contest ill receiv-
ing wide congressional" endorsement. Tbe comment of
S<'nator-A. WilliB Robert.son of Virginia ill typical : "I
congratulate the American Press on its spo1180rship of a
contest which will give recognition to a weekly or other
rural news paper which does the most between now and
November to get out the vote in this year's election. There
11evcr h as been a time in our history when it wa.s more
e•;senlial for all of the people to accept the obligation of
citizenship -and impressing this obligation upon them
ce rtainly is a primary function of our free press."
The thousands of country newspapers scattered through-
out the length and' breadth of the land a.re a powerful
force for free expression tjlal will always command respect.
They are a protection and an asset Possessed by no other
nation.
QUIT THE HANDOUTS
"One of the most difficult aspects of this problem
of deserving public confidence is the fact that most busi·
nessmen are guilty of the same derelictions they criticize
in others. Solllll of them also have the 'gimmies.' The
moral is obvious. Businessmen must siop acquiescing in
government intervention which doesn't seem to directly
concern them. They will have to quit taking a handout
from Uncle Sam with one hand, while they take a poke
at bureaucrats with the other."-Eimer L. Lindset:h, presi-
dent, Edison Electric Institute. -Maim Street by Ralph Stein
