• THE CORONER'S CHARGE
County Coroner Earl R. Abbey and bis jury which
will bear testimony at 3 p. m. today at the Bo.Jtz Mortuary.
Corona del Mar will have a terrible decision to make.
They will be charged with determining the degree of
responsibility and liability of the driver of the City of
Newport. Beach fire true)< which snuffed out the life of a
retired doctor last week .
All testimony of witnesscH cataloged on the police
reports tends to s how that the municipal vehicJe was ~o
blame for the entire collision. There apparently, to thLB
time. ha.5 not bec11 recorded one redeeming factor.
The fire truck ran a red light. it was not using a
siren, or rcrl light or bell. From what markings we ob-
served it was evident that there had been no effort to stop
the truck before the impact.
There is nothing one can say that will lighten the bur·
ctcn either (1 f the dri\'C r, or of the family of the deceased
cloctor who hact been ·a resident of our community for one
day.
There is nothing one can say. and onfy time will erase
the terrible llicturc of the impending cr ash from the mind
of the drivn of the ci ty fire truck. He did not deliberately
run th~ doctor to his death. What terror he felt, what
paralysi~ gripp<>d him we hope he can recite to the satis-
faction of the Coroner and his jury.
But the gr<>at charge of that Coroner. the City Police
and the jury of citizens of this city to perform i• to treat
this driver of the city fire truck in exactly the same way
they would treat you or I. No special favors, no undue
consideration must be tolerated.
But, should there be blame assessed against this young
man then our city mu.st -·IT IS DlITY BOUND -to
defel)d bim. as any business organization would-with all
legal h elp at its corumand.
There \Vas some great, good providence witnessi~
that era.sh and we can only be thankful that it was not
the school bus. which ma kes the same turn from the same
street BC\•eral times daily, that was ground to l>ieees against
the brick wall.

NOT OBSOLETE
The U. S. A"rm y reveals that it is putting special em-
phiu;is on hand-to-hand fighting and infiltration tactic•
in training its new recruits. You may recall that in the
pre-Korean days we were given to understand from variolts
comments by the top military brass that the era of the
foot soldier was virtually n thing of the pa.st.

Dear Mrs. Cole:
Thank you for the suggestion that prompted us to place our
classified advertising in the Tuesday NEWS-TIMES.
My classified ad in the issue of September 12 has kept my
office busy for the past three days. We received many inquiries
about the properties listed and the response was more than
salisfa~tory.
In the future the NEWS-TIMES will certainly be a "must'' on
our advertising schedule.
Sincerely yours,
PHIL D. SULL1V AN
