TRAILER PARK ISSUE FLARES
Dear Ben:
I am sure you wm be the first to admit you are not
graced with . the attitude of infallibility. Therefore I am
confident you will let me question your recent editorial in
which you gently chided some of our citizens who are
striving to convert the City Trailer Camp to a fine city
park.
First, let me agree with you that the trailer camp
operators in Costa Mesa will be tickled to see our bayfront
eye sore go into oblivion. Secondly, let me disagree with
you to the effect that the Anti-Tra.iler Campers are in the
sordid pay of Costa Mesa operators, as was broadly hinted
in the editorial. From what I can find out, they are a~
good citizens aa you or I, Ben.
Newport Beach appears to be floundering 1t.mt in a
thick fog of defeatism. On all sides. we hear how slow
business is. Usually, there is an adjective before the "slow:·
Seriously, there is a valid reason for such a low state
of buincss in an area blessed with so much natural beauty
as is Newport Harbor. Since the end of World W..r II many
new subdivisions have been developed along the coast of
Southern California. They_ can't" even come close in
offering what we have. Then why do people hesitate to
invest money in so many of our harbor areas. The reason
is obvious and there is no use to stir up a h_o rnets' nest
by elaborating on the subject.
Since we can't undertake a wholesale face lifting. let's
use the tools at hand-city properties. One such property
is the Trailer Camp. Jf it was converted to a real park
with green grass and trees along the present two blocks of
bay frontage, it would be one of. the wonders of the South·
land. Close your eyes and visualize .,uch a park bordered
with Royal Palme. Wouldn't such a park be a wonderful
asset to our city and wouldn't it encourage people to movn
to Newport Beach? Wouldn"t it be well wooch the loss of

are we going to contribute as a "Jerry-built" town stagger-
ing around without rhyme or reason?
