TELEPHONES TELL GROWTH
Keystone marking the_tremendous growth of the New-
port Harbor area in the past decade will be the installation
of the 10,000th telephone in the Harbor-Beacon exchange
which it is anticipated will-be installed sometime before
November 2Qth.
· It will mark the passing.ill a 10-year period of almost
triple the capacity of what was jormerly a single exchange:
There were in 1490 in the combined Newport Beach-Costa
Mesa area 1774 telephones.
Remarkable expansion of the community c a n b e
shoWll on the barometer of phone .installations, electric
service installations and gas line connections. Most amaz-
ing is the index of phones which shows that in September,
1947, there were in the Harbor-Beacon exchange 5304 tele-
phones. Within days there will be 10,000. Ten years ago
there were. in the City of Newport Be.ach, 3942 water ser-
'~ces. Today there are more than 7000.
School registrations are also a good barometer: the
elementary schools of t.he City of Newport have grown
from 509 students in 1911 to 1772 when schools opened
this year. The high school -enrollment has also doubled
from 529 in 1941 to more than 1100 today. We just com-
pleted additions lo the high school, additions at Horace
Ensig,1 school and now another $985.000 elementary school
building project is needed.
Our problems are not solved. We have voted money
for participation in an ocean outfall for the sewer sys-
tem. We have on oroer an additional fire truck. We have
hired some additional · full-time firemen, we sadly need
many more. We are greatly understaffed in our police de-
partment. We could. not in any way handle any kind of a
large police problem with an understaffed department.
We have fixed most of our streets. In a very few years
we will be able to keep abreast of street repairs with gas
lax money.
Harry s. Truman
White House
.Washington, D. C.
Dear Harry: •
I see where O>ngrees h&8 set up a Su&-committee (The
Douglas Committeee) which is supposed to map a "straight
and narrow" for members of Congress to toiler. They've
even asked several prominent citizens to tell em what. is
right and what is wrong, and what constitutes shady prac-
tice. Now, Harry, you know that some two thousand years
ago a Good Man set down a very complete set of rulea for
us on what's right and what's wrong " .. facts is, those
rules are so good that more and more people foller them
all the time. I figger that iffen you told the members of
Congress to consult the Good Book when they're in doubt,
why they wouldn't neeil any Douglas Committee to figger
out a straii:ht and narrow fer em. What's more, I don't
reckon the Douglas or any other committee could improve
on the Rules found in this Good Book.
Your ole fren,

PEACE-JUST A WORD
. Feel any different 11-bout the German people this week
than you did a week or so ago? '
On October 19. the U. S. A .. by Congreasional resolu-
tion, ended the state of war with Germany. So German
nationals are no lotiger enemy aliens.
The event rated a few brief paragraphs in the grist of
wire news from ,Washington. It caused not a hundredth
o( the excitement engendered by any one of a hundred foot-
b&IJ "crucials."
Peace seems just a passing word now-as does war.
Russians aren't enemy aLiens, either-nor are Commu-
nist Chinese and North Koreans: yet American blood
drenches the soil of Korea every day of month after month.
: Frenchmen fight on in lndo-Cbina-but there is no
''War.'' .
·British and Egyptian troops clash, while their countries
are at "peaCe.''
Just words-peace and war.
battlefields remain very real.
