At the invitation of the publisher of the Newport.-
Balboa Press, Roy Andersen, principal or the Horate
• En!llgru> School, herewith pmients bis views:
On January 18th, citizens of this community will be
asked to decide on a Bond Issue. The proceeds will be
used for the expansion of our educational facilities. Part
of the money involved is planned for the building of an
aqditorium at the Horace Ensign Sehool. As an educator
and-the principal of this school, I have been asked to tell
what I believe such an auditorium will add to the educa-
.tional offerin!I" of the school. ·
The proposed auditorium, with the music classrooms
which are designed as an integral part of it, would accom-
modate the entire ,music program of the school. At the
present time this includes separate instrumental music
groups with a total of approximately 175 students meeting,
on an average, two or more tinies a week. There are also
four separate Glee Clubs with a combined enrollment qf over
200 students. meeting two to three times s week. In ad-
dition to this, all sixth grade classes have basic music
iru1truction two days a week throughout the year. Seventh
grade classes have an average of one instructional period
per week .
This, roughly, is the music program now being main-
tained, but which could be more effective with specially
designed r ooms and an auditorium in which to work. This
is not an extensive program for a few, but rather a moder-
ate program reaching the majority of students enrolled.
With added facilities this program will reach an even larger
percentage of the s,tudent body and will grow as . the total
enrollment iJ¥:reases. It will also become more significant
to students and will make an increasing contribution t o par-
. ents and the general public as opportunities arise for public
presentations which are not limited by inadequate seating
facilities.
Spee<:)! and dramatic· training could be added to the
music program described above, and still the values of an
~uditorium would not be fully realized. It is my belief that
. a very impi)rtant part of the general education_ program of
the school lies in well planned student assemblies. The
qenefits of these assemblies to the students cannot be
measured by the number or hours the. auditorium is used.
Inatead, we must look to the moral and spiritual values
wlllch -may be fostered, to the inapiratlon which may be
gained, to the audience training whicl! may be initiated, and
to the opportunities for individual -expression which may be
provided. These, too, are important If' we are to measure
the educational implicationa of an auditorium to a school.
It is my belief that the proposed auditorium will add
gTe&tly and increasingly to O!}I' general community·weUare.
At present many of 1our selloat facilities are in use through-
out the year for recreational purposes and for general com-
munity activities. 'l'he auditorium would be available in like
manne~ to meet a community need. Regardless of . com-
.munity use, however, I believe it to be a sound educational
investment. •• (Editors' Note: The Auditorium referred to above, the muaic clU&·
