Well, that's all right with UB._ For the more provoked
you get, ijie more you may thiilk about this Fourth of
July traffic toll that annually makes a massacre out of a
holiday that ought to be for pl.euure and patriotism, npt
for trqedy.
· YJliu think it couldn't be you? ,
Tbat,41 what the 360 people thought who were klUed
over ~Memorial J;>ay holiday just a month ai:o. That's
what tlie 8,936 people thought who have died in holiday
traffic In the last six years.
Yes, that's right '-8,936 people killed in holiday
traffic in the last six yeare ! Almost three times a.a many
a.a were killed at Pearl Harbor. Half a.a many have died
for Am<!\'ica on the battlefields of Korea.,
How many of the1e 8,936 people thousht when they
started out during the holiday that they would -come
back? Not one!
This one was just driving, around the block to get a
morning paper. This one was taking his family to visit
in Peoria. This one wa.s merely crossing the street. Not
one-of them was purpoeely going out to get ltlUed -NOT
ONE!
So, you see, it could be you. •
But here) the bright spot m the plctutt ; it doesn't
have to he you!
The National Safety Council, which bu the grim l'en
spooalbility for estimating th~ holiday tolls in advance,
saya you can make ita estimates loolt lilly by merely 1111ing
a little extra caution. common sense and courtesy to offset
the extra holiday traffic hazards. The CoWlcil says the
toll could be cut in half, or even by two third&, if you and
I would 'make up our minds that, by golly, we $ftll't g<>ing

It's just that simple. rn,t-d of •)'la$, "It coWda't i..

That's all there is to it. •
Happy Fourth of July! See you on the Fifth !
