bearer, GOv. Adlai Stevenson.
His will be a new face to most Americans. They know
little about him, b'!t will bear much during the months
to come. ,Even Republicans, however, who aaw and he11J"Q
Truman's introduction of Stevenson and the latter's speech
of aceeptance could admit a marked difference was appar-
ent between the two men.
Truman, cantankerously· charging at G. 0 . P. windmills
of 20 years ago in one breath, switched to bis usual cocki-
n~trayed by smug hand paddycaking and teetering
heel to toe aatiafaction. For all the world like a little
8Choolmaster teacbinir the faithful by rote. Reciting past
glories undimmed in bis eyes by past and present political
mistakes, graft, corruption and unconatitutlonal capers.
Stevenson, with the suavity of a RQtl\Bll orator, using
well chosen Bibical phraaea and. a aelectlon of others from
Bartlett's Book oI Famaliar Quotations, proved to be a
speaker with whom the Republicans must reckon. Hia
reticence in accepting a-very slow "Dr&tt" by PartY lead-
ers flowed smoothly Into truthful, If subtle, admisaions of
the Admlniatration'a i:uilt.
Stevenson, apparently a bookish man pofl889eed of a
desree of frankness, almost apologized to tbe American
people for the TrumAn Administration's series of domestic
ancl intemational blunders. The televiewer was impressed
tllat stevenson might escape Truman's remote control,
were it not for the fact that Trum-11 selected him for
the nomination. Stevenson may be enough of a dissembler
to return the bosses who cho.oe him back to their fat cat
role8 of Administration eycophanta. Men who blandly
claim to run the government for "the people."
But "the people" may well rise up this time against
the boys who have IUled up their credit with the voters-
voters who have been taxed, directed, controlled, super-
vised and told how to think. Yes, Stevenson was a wise
choice for his party's bosses. But the atipa of the
federal government's creeping socialism hangs about him
heavily, a stench combined with other federal malapropisms
he may find too great to overcome.
