Children Try
To Utrry On
By RICI( DU IROW
HOILYWOOD !UPl) -ABC·TV ian't much on
tbe old fol.ks' audience, so it took budly any time
al all Wednesday night for the network'• new Wut·
em lerles. ''The Monroea," to dilpoH of tM acinl
parenta of the show's family.
Momma and Poppa Monroe departed Ulia vale
early in the hour by drowning in the Snake River II
they and their brood headed Weat to fJltlbliah a
home in Wyoming. and thil immediately provided
ABC-TV with a frontier family in which nobody ii
more than 18 years old. Art gets along with buainea
very well, thank you, at ABC-TV .
SINIOtt MEMBER
The 18-yHr-old senlor member of the Monroet
II Michael Anderson Jr., and he ii now the man of
the family and the star of the Mri•, which abould
lit very well with teen·aien who can only dream of
aucb ecstasy. The four other orpbanl of tht Mon·
roe1 are all siblings of master Anderson, on ac:reen,
and range down to the age of au.
The immediate choice of the new man of the
family iJ whether to tum around and bead home or
continue on to establish the homestead hi.a poppa
wu aiming for. lf he turned around, of coune. there
wouldn't be any series, £0 the only real choice wu
onward .
IMAGINE THE TRIALS
En route, you can imagine what trlak and tJ'ib-
ulaUons there are, for cut and audience alike. un-
lesa, of coune, you are fond of child actors. Anyway,
an Indian named Jim helps them oat and attaches
b.imaelf to the family, and an English baronial type
who ruM most of tM land let. them 1etUe on their
homestead even though his henchmen are all f'Or
giving them the heave-ho. Such henchmen can't be
all bad. They have the makings of television critics. • • •
Robert Lansing and Dana Wynter, the principall
o( another new Wednesday night ABC.TV series.
"~ Man Who Never Wu," are positively ancient
compared lo the Monroes. Mr. Laming ii flirtint
with 40, and Mtsa Wynter ii over 21. and they are
u tplendtd·looking a couple u you will ever see on
the screen or off. Unfortunat~ly, this pleasing auet
is not likely to improve the rather pedestrian nature
of their balf·bour spy series set in Europe, and film·
ed then decptte the howll of Hollywood unions.
LOOKALIKE KILLED
In brief, Mr. Lansing plays a apy who has a looi·
alike who is a playboy, and th1a latter fellow ia mia-
t.aken for him and ia fatally perforeted by a bullet
from a rotter Red. The dud fellow 's wife. Hiaa
Wynter. doesn't want anybody to know he is de-
~ued or el.H hiJ grasping stepbrother will grab the
family fortune, so she agrees to continue the de<:ep-
tion for Lansing, pretending be i3 her mate. The idea
isn't bad, and in the two stare the material will get
the maximum professionalism. But it all depends on
the writers. They'll have to make the scripts t.ingy •
more Jilting and stylish, becawie there ¥n't anything
we don't already know about spies and the rotten
reds.

Fashions Weaved With 'Show Biz'
Theater Guild Answers
Why Poppa Comes Home
By IEA ANDERSON ......,._
When is a fashion parade more than a rash.ion parade!
Anawer: When talented members of Newport Harbor Ch1ldren's 'l'b8'-
ter Guild weave their "show biz" know-how into the production.
But, without the guild's incomparable lyric and song·writing t...;.
Mrs. Ralph Holden and Mn. Ralph Tandowsky, the fund-raising a!Jail' woa(4
just have been another luncheon fashion show. •
More than 400 members and guests were enticed to the N~
Inn to view a Fuhion Showcase from Lorraine Sutherland's unveiled
a three-act original musical entitled, "Why Does Poppa Come Home
Night." •
~
Special guests were 1966 Children's Home Society debu~nles i
their mot.hers wbo were seated in the debutante'1 circle." Hosteaes w
Mn. Holden, Mrs. Ralph Bjorklund and Mrs. Eugene Koch and tbetr d
tante daughters, Robyn. Laura and Katherine. : ..
Beside! the clever lyncs and fast-paced accompaniment, a.noth4l'
unusual upect of the show was the absence of a commentator. The alMl-
ence learned the description of the ensembles anyway u the dialogue .,
the cut, plw printed programs told all. ~
~
Around·the-clock fashions, good looking but nothing unusual •
they ran ~e gamut of past fall trendJ, were reasonably priced ..• probabtt
one of the reuons why "poppa comes home at night" (he can afford to), t
The comedy had women laughing at themselves over their di«
regimen, their less than glamorous early morning appearance and tbett
involvement when they volunteer as club chairmen. t
It subtly gave fashion a ligh t kick. too ... the moral was "It ~
more than haute couture lo get poppa home at night - it takes love." ;
The production enlisted "all hands" from the guild, who tabled stllft
mer vacations to work with behind-the-scenes crews, on arrangem.a.
committees or in the cast. What started out to be a small, intimate 11M
limply ~ and grew, and the overwhelming crowd assured enough fu:Dit
foe the guild's expanded workshops and college tcbola:rship5. -~ . :~
Foolish Mothers Only Have Themselves to Blame
DEAR ANN LANDERS : You hear
a lot these days about overbearing
mothers. How about married daugh-

When our daughter was first mar-

Finally I told her I wouldn't touch
her things If she agreed not to touch

that you would be 10 petty," and add·
ed. "Alter aU , I used to live here"

What Happens When a Customer Drives His Car In
Ever wondered what happens to your car when
you leave it in the morning for 1ervice?
Lots of people do; 10me are even skeptical
about leaving the dealenhip when it'• their new
car and only a few days old with some minor ad·
julltment needed.
Some methods for lllenice that dealers offer
oan be considered antiquated; 1e>me are mediocre,
and a f~ are excellent.
We watched the other morning u these euJ..

indifferent, very few that you could con.sider happy.
Service Mgr. Jim Moffett does his beet to do that.
It might have been beoaUfie of the hour. From
7 a.m to 8:30 a.m .• 52 caa drove into the four in·
comtng IEl'Vice lanes. They needed a:nd wanted
everything trom new windlbield wipera to a 1-'and
new engine for a 1946 Ford. They wen all accom·
modated
Here'a what happen&
The cu9tomer enten, he is met by a service
advisor, who with Ute eu&tomer determine1 what
service is needed and necessary and what service
w repairs are co~ered by the faclory warranty.
Al we stood there we listened as customers
were uked when they would like to pick up their
car . .Most were unconcerned, iOme were in a hurry.
't» pickup time ia very import.Mlt to a fOOd eervioe
depctment.
Aftm' the customer leaves the car, an identifi·
eatic>n number is attached to the roof of the mr and
tile 11m1 number ii attached to the 9U\'ice order.
A central control cent.er. receiving the order,
4i1Patchea the auto to the vanoua service stalls for •
work to be done. A copy of the order goes with the
oar.
When the car is finished in one stall, the eert·
ter is notified and it moves to the next. The control
renter knows where each car is during the day.
At the end of the day we ~ounted a total of
107 cars terviced and either already picked up OI'
waiting for their owner.
As said before, one call was only for a wind·
shield wiper, some were for tune-u~. one was for
a new engme .... but they were all ready to go.
