MRS. SANDE JORGENSEN
Unusual Occu~tlon
Lands Starring Role
" Career Is Ki8n1et
By JODEAN HASTINGS
.. Tbe best preparation for lJ.fe is some-
timea life itself.
And dilco'verin:g t.hls, much to her own
amar.ement, ii Mrs. Sande Jorpnaen Of New-
port Beach, who baa ju.st been named mana-
ger of tbe Huntington Harl>our Beach Club.
While MV« consdously aiming toward
thla goal, the attractive and capable mother of
two bas beel1 drawn into preparing for the
task • if fate were leading her down the path.
'1 guecs it's just became I like people
and bate to be cooped up in an office facing a
typewriter all day," mmed the vivacious new
manager. her 1oit voice still retaining traces
of her Texas accent.
Because of her empathy for people,
Sande quit a "good job u executive secretary
to a company president" after being employed
only a month to join the general office force
of the Beach Club three years ago.
The colncideoces leading to btr presemt
occupation, an unusual one for a womm,
were often marted with humor, lhe revealed.
Born and raised on a ranch 40 mUes from
the small Texas town of Hereford, Wned as a
cattle center, Sande had to be aent away to
school, so the time she spent at home was
especially precious to her.
TOMBOY
Admitting to being a "regular tomboy,"
the-blue-eyed blonde (1'eflecting her Danish
anc~) rode bones at evetry opportunity.
drove a tractor, and It a very young age, kept
hou.se for her father and brothers, since they
had lost their mother when Sande wu ex-
tremely youna.
She didn't enjoy going into tnwn, and
knew very little about moviea or movie stats
so familiar to city children at the time.
After graduating from higb school at 14
and attending West Tex• St.te College and
lat« Eastern New .Mexico University (wbere
she majored in business administration) she
was persuaded by frienda to come to Cali·
fornia.
'Tve worked all my life, but my first job
for money was at the very posh Riveria Coun·
try Club, frequented by many famous Holly·
wood personalities."
NAIVETE
Here Sande's naivete was a oonstat
aource of amuemeot to her employer, and be
still teases her about some of ber faux pas.
"One day a man came in and asked if be
bad any mall. I matter-of·fedly asked pim his
n.ne," she cbortled. "Afterwarda the mana·
ger, in open-mouthed amazement, •plained
that 'UH! man' was a famous movie idol then
married to one of the movie colony's better-
known beauties."
Sande learned ttrat she was never sup-
poeed to ask tbeee people's names, and began
reading movie maguines so she would learn
to recognize the famous patrons!
Another incident occurred when the club
was hosting a wedding reception, MM! ooe of
the guests was a "little IDQn in a Stetson bat."
Sande was used to Stetaons, of course, since
her father and brothers wore them,. but sbe
fell it was out of place at a wedding reception.
Because she "felt sorry tor the little IDQl'l,
and felt he must be embarrassed about his
~t" she struck up a t'OOVenation w!th him.
After discussing riding and palominos, which
her father raised, and receiving an invitation

(Orange wu the only major county to vote for U.)
The measure deserved defeat, bul the obscenity
pn>blem Js still there. The Legislature should move
~idly to put more teeth Into present law, giving priority
lo legistafion aimed at purveyors of pornography to
cblldren. It aeems fair to owume the Legislature will look at
the vote on the CLEAN measure as a declaration by the
cltiuJls of California that action is needed to stem the
tide of pornography, but to isee to it that it is ~Id with.io

Newsweek's Report
Tbe newest attempt by a national magazine at un·
denitanding and explraining Orange County -in the
current is&ue of Newsweek -is about nonnal in iU
combination of acturacy and inaccuracy.
Mart.in Kuindorf, the magazine'.s reporter, corTeCt·

tells truthfully enough about our politics, saying the

ls, for esample, state Sen. John Schriilb..,-the only ad·
mitted Bircher in the state senate -who dourly de-
clares that '~ricanism is not trusting your leaders.'"
Kasindorf continues with a declaration that "the
conservatives have the ball game almost to themselves.
Liberals -not to mention moderate Republicans or
Democrats -are almost litelWlly nowhere."

Contrast in Sportsmanship
~-F.dmund G. Brown, in bis election night con·
cession Of defeat, handled himself in a way to merit
admiration from politiCAI foes as well as friends.
His bearing was one of courtesy and dignity, with·
out a trace of 90W' grapes. He showed his disappoint·
moot, to be sure, but there w• no petulance -nothing
but a display of good sporta1111UJ&hip.
For many, Brown's performance recalled the sorry
coatrast after the 1962 election when Richard Nixon
went bef'Ore television cameras for an embarrassing dis.-
play of bad temper and bad manners. That di.splay may
come back lo haunt Nixon, for even today, while be is
toying again with the presidency, voters who recall that ~orm1nce wonder about h1s stability in a time of

Crime and law and order are natr

inevitable colllaioo. At timea, crime
and violence erupt in the street. of
our communities and all but overrun
our legal barriers, wbicb are becom-

miause.
WE SEE EXAMPLES every day
wbere the supremacy of law and order
is put to teat. Enlorcement officers
are called on to band.le explosive sit.
uations -riots, premedttated UIOD,
civil dltobedience, and wild rampages
-that border on insurrection and an-

RECENT COtJRT decl1lons seem to
