Artists in Luncheon Limelight
The art of sculpture and photography comprised the
private showing in the Lioo Isle home of Mrs. Joseph
&uab·(center) when she honored Mrs. Robert Shelton
{left) and Mn. Eugene Koch with a luncheon. Conver·
satfon of guests naturally revolved around the
artists and their work. Mrs. Shelton, the sculptor,
works in stone, ~ and clay and is especially noted
for. her studies of cla6sical ballet dancers and por-
traits of children. Mrs. Koch, who has studied under
well known photographers in the Southland, b.u re-
ceived wide acclaim m the area for her work.

UCI's Teapot Tempest
ts an a_nU·t"teUectual conformity and an idea va·
cuum in Orange County keeping most University of
Ca1Iloro•a. -trvtne tfudenta from tl"tlng advanure of

United States?
They are, if the views of Dr.tlittln Shapiro, as·
1ocl1te profeQOr of poUUcal tclence at OCI, cu be taken
literally.
Shapiro hu suceeeded in st.lrring up a flurry of
controversy, and that, obvioualy, waa his purpose when
he blasted the "lack of commitment" of the students to
a school or to education wt week.
He bu used a long, 4tbarp needle U>, aa he put l.t.
fi11t urge bi.a fellow faculty members to bold to their
high academic standard.I and flunk those students not
melilW1ng up; and. second, to prod very good students
"to come out from under the rocks" and begin est.ab-
lilbing an Intellectual climate on campus.
Some members of tbe Orange Coast community have
become up1et by Shapiro's blut. Either they never went
to colleg& themselves or their memories are short. For
those who do remember how ~:,1!f: always have been
on unlvenity campusea worth salt intellectually.

ce.Mfully ati.Oed original tboaght or dissent or mental
ferment. be m\llt remember controversies stirred up as
stimulants to thought.
No doubt Dr. Shapiro included in his blast valid
indictments of 10me produw of Orange County sec·
ondary tchooJJ. It likely ii true that some of the UCI
students do loot upon the institution primarily as a
bandy supermarket where they can pick up a degree.
It ii likely, too, that most UCI 6ludents do not yet fully
appreciate the opportunity for excellence and achieve-
ment that is within their grasp.

dents do have a unique opportunity to be vutly better
than the majority, and that opportunity should not be
allowed to slip away.
Dr. Shapiro has performed some service tn stirring
thing-a up a little -in challenging Btudents, parents,
faculty and the community to tb.int and react. His lance
is aimed at complacency -partfC1llarly on the campus.
What's called for on the part of onlookers is a sense ot humor, plus a recall of many, many sue~ tempestl
~ver the years. It's a case of keeping things in perspec·
tive.
This goes for the students -as well as the community
around tbe campus. They dlink the off-<:ampus fol.ks
"don't understaad them." This haa always been true, too.
The fact is that most of the elders looking on do have
good memories, do understand them and are amused at
the way campus history repeats itaei'.t.
Audience Will Gain Too
Community theat~rs have been zapidly coming of
a~ on the Orange Coast. to the P'eat pleasure of tbe
many deYOtees of live performances by talented neigh-
bors. Now a move bu been made to eliminate duplica-
tion of plays and overlapping of play dates.
Eight county little theaters have formed the Orange
County Community Theater Aasodation to foster closer
communication and coordination.
Jt also is probably quite true, u he says. that "there
seema to be a total unfamlllarity with common English

softening. "I love our young people.
They can't help being born young. But
we've got to rea1i&e they're different
than we are.
"Just you take a look at one of
these uppity teen-agers. lib bait's dif·

wear a necktie, a grey flannel suit and
decent-looking 1hoea? No.
"Now maybe he's got a natural

be said. ..Ob, bow this heritage of
glittering night clubs and Hollywood
stars has changed.
"'Three years ago the first teen-age
dance spot opened. And you know how
it is: you let one in and pretty aoon
they take over. The bloc.le was bust·
ed; property values crashed; and now
it's a teen-aged ghetto where no self·
respecting adult would be seen at

"BUT LET'S be charitable. Let's be
moderate. Let's agree that through
&raduallsm any teen..ager can be edu-

to wear a necktie, acqulre enough
money and then take bis rightful place
at our sides as an equal in a restored

"But meanwhile. friends," cried Mr.
Pettibone, pounding the ros1rum with
hia n.t. "it is our sacred duty to pre-
serve OW' adult way of life by keep-
ing theae uppity teen.agen in their
placea -namely, the lut row o! the
bako1J1, the back of the bus and the
rumpus rooms of our bat.emeota I"
Further. the commission members
include aome of the beat men that
could have beta aelected to evaluate
these data. 'Ibey were Earl Warren,
chief juatlce of the United States; Rep.
Gerald Ford of Mlcblgan ; Rep. ruill
Boggs of Louisiana; Sen. John Sher-
man Cooper ol Kentucky; John J. Mc-
Cloy, former high comrolwoner for
Germany, and Allen Dulles, farmer
chlef of the Central Intelligence
Agency.
THEIR REASONED judgment was
that Lee Harvey Oswald fired the
shots that killed President Kennedy
and wounded Gov. John Connally d
Texas.
