HOLLYWOOD (UPI} -We read the network
preas releases:
-"Dan Cupid has been getting a lot of help
during the past year Crom an ABC television show.
-On Dec. 20, 19&5, 'The Dating Game' premiered on
the network. Since then, host Jim Lange and creat0r·
· producer Chuck Bl!Tis have arranged 504 dates
for lucky coul)lel who have appeared on the show.
'We feel we've really affected the per&Onal lives of
hundreds of )'00.Dg people in the past year,' said
Lange.'•
You said It.
-FROM ABC-TV: "Santa Monica pier, a South-
: ern Oalif omia landmark for decades, was the site
• of an exciting capture the other day as two men
dressed as fishermen shot it out with a gang of hood·
• Jums. The event didn't make front-page headlines,
: however. The action wu staged for 'The Felony
: Squad' series, stars Bowvd Duff and Denn.ii Cole
: were the men tn fiabermen'a clothing."
Gaeh.
• -''Rof Tblnnet (of ABC-TV's upoom.lng series,
: "lbe Invaders') hu rocketed to stardom so swiftly
· u one of televllion's hottest properties, that twice
in e row be bas changed series over a weekend." . . You're BW'8 yoo wouldn't like to rephrase that!
: -FROM cas.TV: "Art LinkJetter has chatted
• with nurly 22,000 chUdren in the kids' spot on 'Art
~ Lintlett~. HOUie Party.' It
; Whit, essentially, dJd they have to say to each
• other? ·
: -From ABC.TV, about 10-year-old Donnie Mel-
vin playing opposite Geraldine Page in the "Stage
·• 67'' presentaUon of Truman Oa1>0te's "A Christmas
Memory'': "For a )'00.Dll actor this is the dream come
true, equivalent to a little leaguer's playing base.
ball with Willie Mays."
There must be some other way to describe the
experience.
-FROM ABC-TV, about the coming expansion
of its daily evening newscast from l5 minutes to
halt. an hour: "Depth . . . meaning . . . a new dy·
nanuc approach to news.''
That's right. Something like what CBS.TV and
NBC-TV have been doing.
-"By coincidence, filming on 'Welco~ for the
General,' the ABC·TV 'Iron Horse' epi6ode for Mon·
day, Jan. 2, was begun on the anniversary of the
burnin.g of Atlanta by Sherman's troops. The seg-
ment mvolves an attempt to assll9Sinate William
Tecumseh Sherman by a band of former Confeder·
at-e soldiers seeting revenge for the burning of At·
lanta."
Life is just one remarkable event after another.

alley" known u Newport Boulevard.
The present freeway picture, however. is far from
perfed -or completion. Harbor Boulevard wllJ carry
much more traffic than in the PQSt in its role as tempo-
rary tennlnus of the San Diego Freeway.
Al.lo the Brlstol·Palisades signal at the end of the
Newport· Freeway will bring frustration to peak hour
driven.
tn addition, lt ts antidpated that within three ye1r1
construction will begin on a further extenson ol the New·
port Freeway, eUminattnr the Newport Boulevard botU&-
neck aimed at Newport Belcll.

UF Drive Nears Goa]
Newport Beach ltas done, well again this year on its
Uruted Fund drive.
United Fund President Ooo Flamm th.is week re-
ported that 85 percent of the campaign's U51,854 bas
been achieved.
And that's a record goal. The amount contributed
to date by individuals, groups and business firnu exc~s
any amount donated in a l1milar period in the Uo1ted
Fund's 10.year history.
The 1966-67 figure so f.ar la ,122,307.
That's a lot ol money. And U means a lot of help to
Harbor Area Boy Scouts. Girl Scouta, YMCA't, the Orange
County Children's Hospital and various other youth and
adult welfare agencies-23 in all
One contribution does it all That's why it's called
a "United" Fund.
United Fund President Flamm cays.that the drive is
continuing. It must cont!Jlue-for there ia nearly·$30,000
still to be raised.
F1amm is confident thet before ~d or the United
Fund year, sometime next summer, the money will be
raised. .

months, the extension of the San Otego Freeway to Mac·

chester mU&t still bear ttie drums, but
they no longer ttutter. They have be-
come a wild combination of rim shot
and paradiddle and bass beata that
add up U> no silent hymn but rather
to cacapbo.ny. The beat and counter
beat arise out of Mancbester's soon
to be publbbed book, "The Death of a
President" and they reflect both
agony and paradox.

AN
OPERA
LOVER
"The major question regardlng opera today ts whether it can be pop-
ularized," explalned Velma Sun, the gentle-voked founder and chief fund·
r aiser for the IAgu.na Beach Festival ot Open. "It must be popularized,"
the quickly added, 0il Udl ireat art fonn ii ever to pay iu own way. Tbis is
the main reuon our swnmer productions we given in English.••
Velma's deep interest in muaic trace.s back to her childhood. Although
born in San FrandlCo to e~:!:nta who we.r. fiercely proud of their naturaliud
American citizeDlhip, V . grew up su.rrounded by the tnditiona and cul·
ture of an ancient Chlneae clriliution.. She alto attended classes at both
public and Cbinete IChools. After the family moved across the bay to Oak·

By her eighth birthday piano les11>D1 had been incorporated in.to bu
busy young life. Thus began her appreciation and love ol music. She con.
tinued to study piano while attending bJgh acbool, and declared mu.sic as
her major when she enrolled at Mills College. "I was fortunate to be exposed
to several fine teachers during those yean," ahe milled. She received both
her bachelors and masters degrees from the northern California school, and
spent an additional year studying at an eastern college.
While ahe was attending Mil.I! one of her younger sisters' tutors intro-
duced her to a good looking young man who was majoring in political Jcience
at the University of California at Berkeley. Tse Kiong Sun. a grancbon of
Sun Yat Sen who founded the Chinese republic, began dating her. A long
court.ship followed.
After their marriage, the couple settled in San Francisco. When 'World
War Il ended. Tse flew to Chungldng to join bis father. Son Fo. who beaded
the Yuan. the legislative branch of the young republic. V6lma stayed behind
awaiting the birth of her first child.
Kia Lin. now 20 and a student at the University o! Cllif omia at Im An·
geles. was nearly a year old before 1be met her father for the fl1'6t time.
Velma and her infant daughter settled in Shanghai. The Chinese, capital b.ad
been moved to Nanking. and Tse commuted between there and the coastal
city. "I often took the night train to Nan.khlg for visit.a," Vtlma Wd, her
black opaque eyes opening wide.. "I never learned until yearc later there
was great danger from bombs on this trip. The railroad no an extra engine
ahead of the train to test the tracks for safety."
The communists already had begun their push for power, and by 1950
the militant socialists had taken over completely. When this happened, Velma
was in Hong Kong awaiting the birth of her second child, Kai Yu. who is now
studying at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Tse soon joined
Velma. and they all settled down to a comfortable We in the crown colony.
Tse joined a banking firm, and after her daughters grew up a little, Velma
began to study piano again.
During those years she did a lot of reding that included some of Plato's
writings, eome Chinese mysteries by a Dutchman named Gulik, and books by
Gide, her favorite author.
Eight years ago the couple decided to return to the United States. Sun

Most Christmas Plarits Belong In The Garden
Plants are popu!ar Christmas gift items. The only trouble is many
people who receive potted plants don't know how to care for them after
they are through blooming. Here are some directions for caring for the
plants most usually received as Christmas gilts.
Aul•as make beautiful looking potted plants for they are literally
a ma.s5 of colorful blossoms. However, they are definitely not house plants,
and should be put outside immedf:ltely if )'QU intend to keep them grow-
ing and he.althy.
TheM planh will do quite well in the garden in this area if certain
cultural practices are followed. They are one of our most acid loving plants
and should be planted ln the shade in pure peat mOS6 and supplied with
good dninage. Even the so-called sun azaleas will do better if planted in part
shade.
Feed th9m add food in the spring and use an occasional acidilier,
such as sulfur, or some other chemical acidifier. ln the summer, give each
plant chelated iron every month or two, or whenever the new growth yellows.
CyclArMn1 should not be considered house plants either, but as shade
plants for the garden. Grow them in shade as you would tuberous begonias,
in a soil to which humus-organic matter. such as leaf mold, bas been added.
Be sure the top of the tuber ls above the soil level. or water is apt to collect
on it and the tuber will rot.
Poinsett! .. needs no description. Since the potted gift plant has been
forced. protect it from the cold when you first receive it or the leaves will
fall ofi quickly.
WMn It comes time to plant it outside, select a well drained spot ln
lull sun. Cut the items back to two or three eyes, and protect It from
freetlng until it becomes acclimated. It will grow rapidly in the spring, and
to keep it from getting too tall by next year, cut it back again this June or
July.
Aa f•r .. African violet. are concerned, people can be divided into
two classes: thoee who can flower African ~et.s and thoee who can't. One
aathority claims that these aame people can be divided into two more cate-
gories: those who deep with their windowa open and those wbo sleep with
them closed. In other worda to succeufully flower African nolell they need
to have warm nights. Tb~e unique ln that they pref er a higher oJght time
tempenture than a cla temperature.
The kitchen 11 mually the best place to grow them because of the
extn beat and humldJty that is found there.

SPA·RKLE IN THE EY'E
IT TOOK TIME, TALENT AND A
llT OF WHIMSEY TO LIGHT UP
When Santa Claus and his sleigh pull into the Orange
Coast area on Christmas, Old St. Niclt will find more lights
end more colorful home decorations awaiting him than ever
before.
From Fountain Valley to Laguna Beach, Christmas
lights are sparkling from roof tops, twinkling in trees and
spotlighting Nativity scenes, plump Santas, dancing pixies
and red-nosed reindeer. Decorations run the gamut from
a 1impte Chridmas candle in a window to electronically·
controlled reindeer bobbing round a pine tree. But Santa
Claus is the perennial favorite. The agile gent can be found
perched on roof tops, clinging to boat mash, sitting in juni·
per bushes and peering out of bougainvillea vines.
It's a good time of year to take the family on a sight.
seeing tour. Any area will do, but be sure to include a trip
to the bay to see the reflecting Christmas lights, and pick
a clear night for the full effect.
