That'a how Job.ft Hbward Bamea, now known u Justin Tarr, one
of the stars o( ABC'a llat Patrol, came back to town.
To the folb ma.. be wu a celebrity and they stopped him on
the street to ask for hia autosraph. To the childtto in Penroee

visited them, aipio1 autosrapbs and entertaioina them with hia auitar. While home. be ao visited the veterans and sokfien at
Fort Canon Military HOlpital.
He was interviewed oo televis;on and ndio and the local col-
umnists carried bis picture and stories in the daily newspapers.
It wu a ahor1 twenty years earlier that his father, John Doyk
Barnes. bad brouaht the family there from Amarillo, Texas and
ltnlgled to make a ao of n.nclung. just outside of Colorado
Sprinp. They raited Blact Anps cattle and quarter bones.
"From the time I ,.... m, I wu ridina. For a while I wasn't
sure whether I wanted to be a nncher or a bronco rider. When I was
thirteen, it wu .etUed. The ftnt bronco I rode out of a rodeo
chute aun.ftshed and threw me. knocking me unconacious. I decided
on rabcbinJ."
But then TllT'a father died and with him went T11T'1 ambitiom
to become a rancher. After that his interests varied from a.
tomizinl can to hair 1tylin1. For a while he even tbou&ht about

"'1bal ooe day I wu watching television. I saw Jamea Dean
in the movie 'East of &ten' and I made up my mind to become
an actor."
After 8ndin1 out that Dean had attended the American Academy
of Dramatic Atta, Job.ft Howard Barnet cbanaed his name to Justin
TllT and left for New York. His first efron. in actins at the
Ac.demy left him completely frustrated.
.. I l'Jell rve always been somcthina of a rebel. I found it dif.
fk:ult to conform to any particular style of actina and yet I knew
I would have to appt,. the known techniques to develop u an

1 was the only one who ever presented
Lcnay on nerwort TV. But. after all, his
humor wasn't suited to TV audic~. For
kktiliou is the medium that is conacientious-
ly dedicated to offending no one.
"Now lhat." says Allen with a half smile,
.... a virtuous impulse. We all ought not
to offend anyone. But truth can be offensive.
And comedy deals with truth."
If be bas such a low opinion of the
medium, why does he do television? Allen's
answer: ""So much money, so little effort.
As lollJ a the world wants to pay me to
encertam, nJ eotcrta.in. A plumber may
haYe to wort with dripping faucets and
dirty pipes and stopped-up drains because
that'• what he does best. I do television
br.c:ame I am in the entertainment business,
and TV ii a large part of that business."
Allen 1eea littk hope that television, even
educational or to-alfed public TV, will of-
fer wider ICope in the humor field. None
otha than Groucbo Marx once said. "What
TV needl to buraeon comedy to its former
peal is atirc.. the •gutsy• kind that we get
oo oc:naion from Steve Allen ... "But some
critics tay Allm's cunent aeries lacks the
old apertk and satiric wit, that it seems to
be a rdlub of old times that doesn't look
• FOCI the aecood time around.
lbe udW'Ci't., -r. Allen, hasn't censored
any of his material. so far. Perhaps it's
br.c:ame I.here hasn't been anything much
to Ft upeet about. It may be that Allen
is just being a realist, being practical about
the limits of TV, saving his enerl}' for
efforts where it docs the mott good.
He learned a "lesson" in practical politics,
too, when he ran for Congress in I 96S. Al
it turned out, he was disqualified by a tecb-
nic:ality in State law before the elec:tioo.
.. ] learned about what misJ>t be called the
seamy s.ide of politics. I won't run aiain-r
too busy with many thinp. Alt0, I don't
go for handshaking, the coffee klatching and
all that. I'm concerned onlr. with the issues."
Like many with a philosophic turn of
mind. Allen finds many problems easier
to contend with on their intel.le<:tual rather
than their emotional or irrational levels.
This distrust of emotion, typical of the
18th century <ige of rationalism, evidences
itself when questions of a personal nature
arise. He confirms, when queried. that he
had asthma rather badly as a child. (In facl ,
continued asthma led to his discharge from
military service ) He adds a story about
being allergic to dogs. You mention that
you can sympathize, that you know a child
with asthma, and you mention that emo-
tional problems are mixed into the illness.
He smiles politely. and quickly, before this
can be explored, goes into a formal speech
about how, indeed, doctors arc finding that
many illnes'e~ arc psychosomatic. You ask
about his own experience with psycho-
analysis. -He 1umps from the specific to the
general, saying that, ideally, such help will
one day be available to all who need it.
You ask ahout the younger generation. Says
Allen: ·'They rebel against the state of the
world, ?gainst certain adult values. Their
disillusionment is understandable. They arc
very much concerned with the sensual-
with music. colors. lights. emotions, sounds.
But while re1ecting the old values, they have
no incrca-;ed w•pect for logic, or rules of
evidence or the philosophy of law."
Allen find~ this disturbing, just as he is
disturbed by the fact that "the average man
docs little thinking at all." He says one of
the basic prohlems today involves the "com-
plexities and technicalities of an industrial
society and a tendency to continue thinking
in I 6th-century ways."
No douht. new patterns of thinking. aQd
of ~cling. will come about. But they may
not be in the reasoned, logical mode that
Allen trust~. However, he is quite prepared
for that.
"The world moves so fast. I was readina
about Stokeley Carmichael in Life mapr.ioe
the other day. Now, he's thought of u a
member of the radical left by many people,
But one statement jumped out at me. H~
said he used to really be tuned in to the
youth of today. But lately, when be tried
to communicate. some of them were way
beyond him."
"Man.'' says Allen. this time :ovith a wide
smile, "thal c0uld happen to any of ual"

Parties for tbe 1V p ..... Wbetber
1lley l.1'e beld In tbe opulent Century
Plaa HOie! ar In a ~
~ always 1tart tbe same.
THE FIUT 15 minute. or ID are
atnya subdued. After about 30 mtn-
utea thlnp pick up ln direct propor·
atat tioa to the number of drlnb consumed.
Now more and more people are arriving. At the on&-bour mart
tbe place la jumpm,. nm.tter there's a shrill cacophony of
talk that would drown out a roct bend.
At a prea puty lt ts easy to identity t.be types. Even if you
don't have a ICOrecanl.
Guys who need baJrcutl are always actors. Guys with dark
autts, narrow ties and-DarTOW lapels are always from UmvenaJ.
Glrta wttb very abort mlnlaklrta and beguiling exp11!111ons
are starlets there to be -. and make contacts.
OFTEN YOU WON'T -the host of the pe.rty until mid·
evening. I once went to one at the Lo9era Club for tboee who
bad lost their caae1 and been ••convicted" on t.be Perry Mum
lerles. at which bolt Jl.aymoad Burr didn't show up at all.
Nobody lflemed to m.tnd-after a while. Ray bad a good reuon, tbcJuab. He WU CP.&Jte UJ at the time.
Some press parties are loordJnately dull. Those are the
tlnd in wblcb the hosts show a lack of lmagina don and 1bere'1
ootblng to do except partake al the refreshments and swap lies.
Others can be tun and amulllng. There was, for instaoce,
tbe time that guests were taken to t.be party in a hearse to
meet the master of suspeme, Alfred Hitchcock.
Another that comes to mind is when KTIV. Los Angeles.
hired an entire eight-<:ar Dte.el train for what wu blUed as a
trip to nowhere-which cumed out to be Azusa. about 18 miles
down the tracb-wbere a barl>ecue wu se~ for the l~ or
more guests.
llCENTLY, rr WAS Screen Gems' great director of public
relations Jlm Hardiman, who chartered three champagne.equipped
buaea and the S.S. PriDceu for a big bub at Ports of Call,
complete wftb a clever Hawalla.n show at the harbor.
At preu parties you can always depend m the following
thiDp happening: (a) Someone will spill a drink on the dress
yoar wtfe Just bad cleaned; (b) You will be button-holed by an
eaaer beaver young and inexperienced press agent who will
try and llell you an Interview wfth his client whom nobody ever
beard of "but baby this guy la simply greet," be will tell you;
(c) An actor wboee &bow baa just been cancelled wUl knock the
Nieben r1ting aystem and an actor wboee aeries bas beer> renewed
will tell you bow accurate It ls; (d) A newspaper columnist and
bla date will arrive 15 mlnutel late holding up the whole bus--
or maybe even a plane.
AN ELEGANT VEaSJON of the press party Is~ press junket.
I have beetJ to New Yo'*. Washington, D.C .. Canada, San
Francl.9co, Hawaii, Europe and a number of other places on
such ventures.
The Junket Is distinguiabed from t.be party by the fact that
unless you're an Idiot you can always come back with a good
story. A second plus la the fact that going on a press jW\ltet
la the nearest thing to being back Ln your mother's arms. Every·
thing ls done tor you. But when you return It 's bard to get
back to reality again.
Now, will someone pleue pass the aspirin ....
