UC's Oath Controversy
In M a r c h. 1949, the Uruvers1ty of
C3lifomia Board of RegellU voted to
ador-t a loyalty oath to be signed by
au members of university faculty and
staff. The oath specifically required a
denial of memberahip. or belief in.
subversive organ.i.iatioos. with em·
phtiis oo a denial of C.Ommunist af-
fiUationa.
Tb.iJ triggered a chain ructloo of
resentment, cootroveny and bitter-
ness in tbe academic rommunity
which rose to a crescendo when in the
summer of 1950, the regen~ dlsmlsn·
ed 36 members of the faculty who re-
f&IMd to sign the 08Cb (none of whom
were accused of Communist affllia-
9'onJ). The whole emotional and UD·
~y business represented "a na·
dJr in the hiltory of American aca-demic freedom," according to David fl, Gm'dDer in "The Oalilornia Oath
