TELEVISION VIEWS Film Series For Children By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -With televieed movies so popular with adults, CBS-TV now has decided ro set up a special eight-week series of motion pic- tures expressly m children. The series, "The ~ Children's Film Festi- val," will debut the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 5, and be a weekly hour except for the final program, a 90·minute productioo, on Easter Sunday, March 26. Hosts and naJTators for the first seven pro- grams will be puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and Fran Allison -in short, Kukla, Fran and Ollie. CBS says the serii!S w1ll present "outstanding award- winning moti<>n pictures from all -over the wol"ld made especially for and about children." THE FEB. 5 premiere offering will be a Japan· ese film, "Skinny and Fatty/' d~be<l as dealing with "two boys -one who excels in sports, at studies and at making friends, the other shy, awk- ward and afraid, who become cl<>5e friends and help each other io mat~." The Feb. 12 feature will be a Russian pro- duction. "The Blind Bird," and it concerns "a boy and his blind pet pelican (and) details the great ..sacrifices he makes to get the bird's sight restored." Other movies to be shown include "The Yellow Slippers," a Polish folk lej!end; "The Red Balloon," a French entry, and the 0 . Henry tale, "The Rao· som of Red Chief," a Russian feature. THE 9GMINUTE Easter Sunday special will be "Hand in Hand," a British film described as ''the moving story of ~ friendship between a liWe Catholic boy and a Jewish girl who learn for them· selves and remind those who might doubt it that one God watches over them all." The two other mo~ that bring the 'total to eight are expected 1X> be announced soon. The foreign language films are dubbed in Englisb. In.formatively, CBS-TV describes tms e»llee- tion of eight movies, previously seen in thea~. as an ''innovation in children's programming!' l don't know what I can possibly say to top that, ex· cept that there obviously is no end to creative tele- vision pr<>gramm.ing. CBS-TV adds that it hopes "a whole now source of materials for children's programming will evolve from this new serii!S. Dennis the Memtce i • i I ' I ,. _..,.. '..-"t"' • .. Law in Action MEET MR. MACHINE The impersonal machine that dis- penses all kinds of things can create hard legal problems. Recently Jones bought airplane in· surance for a round trip to Dayton, Ohio. He stuffed fl.50 into the slot machine for $62,500 in insurance on a "scheduled air carrier." On the way back the .flight from Dayton to Chicago was fogged in and cancelled. Jones had to get home to California next day. The airline arranged for him and two others to take an air taxi to Chi- cago. The Uttle plane never made it. Jones was killed. Mrs . Jones made her claim for in· surance. The insurance company re- jected it. The accident happened on " non-scheduled plane, the company said, and Ms policy had explicitly ex• eluded accidents on such planes. BUT THE COURT niJed for Mrs Jones: Though this plane was not Quotes----. Dr. Gibson Reaves, USC at· tronomy prof. -''By studymg the scraps in a kitchen you can learn a lot about the1 oook and the meal. By studying the lef~ overs in the clusters ol galaxies perhaps we can find out how ~se star aystems were fortn· ed." Dr. E . WU.son Lyon. Pre1. Po- mona College -"Nobody ls so helpless today ag the man who has a narrow education, who t'an't t.hift when circumstances :-hange" j I scheduled, the vending machine did not make this difference clear to Jones. He bought with the reasonable expectation that the policy would cov· er bis whoie trip, · including reason· able substituted iligbts. The company should expeet suotl things now and tben. In ma~produced contracts and mass sold things, the buyer's reason· able ex.pectatklns-ean only be defeat. ed il it is plain that he knew of the contract'i. limitations. For a contract means a meeting of the minds and therefore an infor~ buyer. The ma· chuw issues a policy before anybody can.-read it. Depositing the money buys tile unread contract. COURTS ARE LIKELY to construe ambiguities due to such operations against the insurance rompany. When the vending machine sells thing!> it is ha.rd to get warranties from it. Any warranties in the thing may be limited to what is stated on the article or what might be reasdn- ably implied. Again, in case of doubt the law may look for what the buyer had reason to expect when he dropped Ws money in the slot. Sometimes the machines can be sued: The government may sue a 11lot or pinball machine 11 lt is being used for illegal purpor.es. The government asks that the machine be forfeited and perhaps destroyed. Why sue the machine instead of its owner? Be- cause. for one thing, you can't find the unknown o w n e r to sue. and ro you sue the thing. Let the owner come forward if he wantli to after the suit is brought. "In fact," the group's re- port said, "the farmer. miller and the baker.wholesaler have a very poor profit picture.'' THE BREAD INDUSTRY raised prices, the report went on, In an ef- fort to cover increasing com. In a statement that surprised no one fa· millar with the food busine6S, ~ sub- committee added that fierce competi- tion sharply limited the price boosts. AB to assessing responslbllity for th& higher costs, the report put some of the blame on consumers. It seems that the pubUc demands so many dif· ferent types of bread that one store chain said "it baked more than 150 siies and varieties." TWS SORT OF tnfoT1T1ation might have inspired some government think· err. to press for standardization, but the subcommittee wisely avoided any such r~ommendatlon.
