Pol~.,l~rtainment Similar ., ~ -..
Pageant Still Th~iUs
By JODEAN HASTINGS
Of 1111 DellP '"" Stiff
'-rhere really is more similarity between
politics and the entertainment field than
people realiie.
"Both require a sincere interest in and
liking for people, and without these a person
bas no business in either. That's why Gover-
nor Reagan and Senator Murphy are so
great."
So says Ann Whet.more, charming, petite
wife of the new senator from the 35th Diltrict
James Wbetlmre, who added that both pro-
fessions require an individual to put aside bis
penooal problems reprdlea of bis feelings
llld always put bis best effort. forward.
THIRD TIME AROUND
Although the Whet.mores are atteoding
their third inauguration (Jim 6erved two
terms as assemblyman), Ano reported they
were "still thrilled by it all."
"Thi! year, particularly, will be the most
meaningful for the girls," she enthused.
"The girls'' are daughter Pat, 16, who
will graduate this year from La Habra High
School, and Karen, 14, who attendc Sonora
High School. For them it has been particular-
ly exciting this year since they are old enough
to attend many of the functions taking place
in the capital.
ACTIVITIES
The Wbetmores attended the joint dinner
for the Senate and Assembly Monday; the Lt
Governor's reception today; and will attend
the Governor's coru:ert tomorrow, climaxing
the busy week with tile i.naugll, ntion and ball
Thursday.
Prior to the lnll Senator and Mrs. Whet-
more planned to entertain th.U-staff at a
private dinner in Sacramento.
A:re clothes much of a problem? "Espec-
ially with the budget," Ann groaned. "I wear
lots of suits became they are practical and
pack well," said the slender, blue-eyed red-
head. "And lite m~t of the ytdves in Sacra·
mento, I really like the. knits .. Jn addition to
not having to worry about wrintling they are
warm for Sacramento's cold winters."
BACK TO ISUSINl!SS
After the ball it will be ba~ to business
as usual ftQI' the Whetmores. Ann and tbe girls
will return to their La Habra home where
she will resume her work in her h\15band'•
law office and handle his booking business fot
dance orchestras.
-While regretting that nunaging thet;e af.
fairs here, in addition to her home and two
lively teen-agers, leaves her little time for
community activities "senators and teen-agen
do like to eat," she laughed.
The serrator, who still plays in bis dance
orchestra when he has time "for relaxation
and a change of pace,", was in the entertain-
ment field when the codple met.
(See WHETMORES, Page 14)

VOCATION TO A VOCATION -Music and
politics are dear to the hearts of the Ja~
Wbetmore family. The new senator from the
35fh District is joined at the pimo by wife
Ann and daughters Pat. 16, and Karen, 14
(from left). Mr's. Wbetmore finds a great
similarity between the two professions.

Too Much
ly RICK DU IRoW
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -For the penon ~Ible
of only so much goodwill durin.g the Christmas sea-
aon or any other, television is a constant relief.
Then, even as the Jut boors tick away before the
deya of reverence. one is returned to the real world
Of jazzy nep a~ Nld bad .~ ... Haa 0o -
one ever l'Oiisidered a holiday truce of decent length
between video and tbe home audience'!
'lbe only major suspension of oom.merclals I
can remember in recent yean was during the four
ckys following the assassination of President Ken·
nedy. Yet it should seem that there are days each
year in the lives of ordinary persona that have a
right to be treated with full -rather than partial
-respect, particularly by a medlium'whicb, throug"1
its influence in refiediog values, can do much good
or harm.
SURELY TELEVISION cannot wiah to be known
u a medium that requ2rtl a tragedy to make it act
with dignity, or just plain decency.
I suppo8e I resented more than anything else
this put Cbristma the automobile dealen who
came on full of reverent words about the rut mean·
ing of the season, and told bow they weren't going
to pitch their can, but then ca&Ually mentioned lD
passing that they would be open after a day or ao
-or other words along these tines.
Who are these people anyway? How dare they
intrude on such a holiday? Bow Gare they prsune
that IDJ'ODe is interested in their views about the
Chrbtmas season, or wishes to bear them sennOl'lhe
from a used car lot? How dare a station allow such
fellows to indulge in such tastelessness -these
people who could never ~et on television unlea1
they bought their way Qn'!
AND THEN HOW charming it was shortly after
Christmas to bear these same fellows explain how
cheaply customers could buy theilr ca:rs now, where-
u only eeveral months bef'Ore they Wtft ao much
more expensive -in sh«t, what idi()ts viewen
were for listening to their ori, rinal commerc:ials.
Television aho contributed some othet' choice
tidbits to the holiday season. Monday morning, fOr
instance, all three of our major networks devoted
COMid erable tiime to coverage of the Rose Parade
-whereas not one of these organizations could
find time recently in the prime evelling boon to
devote a full documentary to the di.mute between
Mrs. John F. Kennedy and author William Me-
chester over his book. ''Derath of a Presidenl" Such
judgment concerning coverage of both event.s gives
you a clue as to what television really likes to do
with its valuable time, and why you should treasure
your newspaper.
ALSO MOND~Y, during coverage of the Rose
Bowl football game, the announcer -one of those
fellows who tells you that couple of coaches are
"bitter enemies" 1M1 the field though friends other-
wise - reported that 100 Vietnam reteran.s were
guests at the contest, courtesy of an automobile
company. The company is a big sponsor with the
network, and while it was a ni~ gesture for the
firm to treat these veterans to the game, how taste-
less it was to put in a plug for the credit.
And a happy New Year to you too.
Dennis the Menace

Weakening an Argument
In most private arguments, we tend
to weaken our own case by pushing
it too far, by claiming more than
should be righUully claimed. When we
do the same in public argument, it
just breaks down any true communi·
cation between contending parties.
La!>t month, the vice-president of a
large tobacco company told an audi-
ence that the government's campaign
emphasizing the dangers or smoking
"is part of a growing trend to govern-
ment by big brother."
And he went on: "I need not teU you
that the foundation stone <>f our de·
mocracy is freedom of choice. If. un·
der the guise of protecting consum-
ers. or any other guise, this freedom
is lost. we are all lo!>t."
THJS IS ALMOST a classic example
of weakening an argument by push-
ing it too far. If we agree that th'
p u b l i c must have "Creedom of
choice," then we must also have
'reedom of access to all Information,
for if essential information is lacking,
our choice is not free, but blind. And
the government, indeed, bas llgged
far behind the medical profession in
''empha&i.zing the dangers of smok·
Ing"
Jf we are worried about "b i g
brotherism." tlte worst way to oppose
it is to call ror "freedom of choice"
when the government is actually of·
fenng It to us by Jetting us know that
we smoke at our own risk. It doeti not
~ion ui; from smoking: it simply warns ,;, .

Business and conservative elements
in America have continually injured
their own cause by shouting "Woll!"
too Jong and too often, so that the gen·
eral public no longer believes it when
the wolf really begins lurking on the
landscape. These constant cries have
made it easier, not harder, for go"ern·
ment to encroach on private activities.
THE WAY TO WIN the public is by
an intelligent discrimination between
those government policies which are
needed to protect the conf>umer from
bia own ignorance, and those which do
unjustly 1nterfere with freedom of
choiee and purchase. By indiscrimi-
nately labeling everything the gov-
ernment does as "big brotherUm,"
private enterprise has conditioned the
public to accept, rather than reject,
stattsm.
H social security is called "social·
Ism," as it was 30 years ago, and if
MedJcare is called "socialism." as it
was last year. then the public wm
say, "If this i& socialism, then we're
