$30,000 Post
At UC Berkeley
SAN DIEGO (AP) -Dr. Clark Kerr
says he will decide "in the reasonably
near future" on whether to accept a
reported $30,000 a year professorship
at the University of California's Berk-
eley campus.
Kerr, fired as president of the unJ.
versity last January, was honored at
a private dinner Sunday night by stu-
dent leaders from UC's nlne campuses.
The rou1lng welcome brought tears to
bis eyes.
"I have some wonderful offers from
around the country," he said. "People
have been very generous. At the same
time, I'm devoted to the University of
California."
Kerr tried to avoid comments on the
university 's problems, saying the cur·
renl situation "speaks for itself "
He would not speculate on th<' uni·
versity financial picture in re~ard to
propo!!ed cutbacks by the Rea gan ad·
ministration.

People's
Aggressive
Tendencies
In reflecting about the Great ChJ.
cago Blizzard o( '01, ma.oy .persona
bave commented that a Clty-wide
crisis of tbiJ kind ''br'ingJ people ~
gether" and makes them "more hu-
man toward one another."
Whal actu.ally happens in sucb lit,
uations is something quite different.
People's aggre&sive tendencies are
d.ireded outward, toward a common
enemy -in this case, the storm.
As their aggressive tendencies are
drained off, away from each other,
they are then enabled to behave in
a more friendly fashion. 'Ibey are no
longer suspicious and fearful of each
otner, but united against an uternal
Coe
THE PRIME EXAMPLE in our
time. of course, was the splendid be-
havior of the Britisb people under tile
Nazi bombings, when they conducted
themselves with great nobility. Sac-
nf 1ce and heroism became ordinary
inddents, and strangers became like
members of one fiamlly .
"This is the way it should be all
lhe time," many persona observe
wistfully -and, ideally, it should be.
But the human animal is genetically
endowed with an aggressive drive,
and only exceptional circumstances
allow us to divert this drive from
those around us.
INDEED, THE MAJOR problem of
survival for the bwnan race may
consist is fmding a suitable substitute
-object for our agrgeu1ve lenden-

Some 25 percent of the original

boundaries oC California ~le parks.~
There are 28 such park!, containing
115,000 acres on Which oow stand over

More than 815,000 acres of growing
redwoods are maintained for perm-
