Corona del Mar Chamber of CommM:ia W .. d'le''• with the Chamber of Commerce of the
Un.ftecl States, a loni·standlng goal of the CdM com· . ..,~.

1' a W ._,._i fn the Chamber of Commerce de-
~l 1be city baa two of them.
~~the dty ls served by the Newport ~ r ot Oemmerce, wtdcb ham km&· •·the 'llffYlllt'8e wltlt the Natioul Cllamt;er.
Secondly, the Corona del Mar community bas a
chamber that bas been noted over the years for
many aood worts on the southeasterly end of the
city.
The C<nna diet Mar group b• Joni aought ••
Uonal lft1lll&ion In thil area w1-e tht Niwport
Harbor Qiamber laas been tnown as tlM "anctlon-
ed'' aff1lllle.
So it came u considerable surprise to many
local observers when it wu recently announced
that the Corona del Mar Chamber had won nation-
al recognition.
Comes now a letter from Charles W. Hareaugh,
membenhlp sales manaeer from the U.S. Chamber .e1c.unera.. Lamentabty, Rareaugh reported that the U.S.
membenhtp approval for the Corona del Mar
Chamber wu all an unfortunate mistake.
In epoloptic tonea, he explained that somehow.
t.he Corona del Mar application was processed
tbro~ the national chamber offices "before the
ift atton wu complete."
So &oday, there ii a touch of emba~ment
all the way around.
Ot the ftft prlndpal cities now growing all over
~ plaoe in Oranse County, each is served by only a
ain&Je Chamber ol Com~rce. Newport Beach. of
com"R • .is unusual ill that it ii a municipality com·
poeed of many miero-<!Om.munlties. •
Actually, il each mfcro<ommunJty had its own ctwnw of C6mroerce, we couJd end up with C ol
C'• tor Central Newport. Mariners Mlle, Lido Isle.
Balboa Ial&Dd. Udo Suell, WesU:liff, BaJboa, Corona
de1 Mar. West Newport and IOll on ad infinitum.
While l.ackini D&t.lonal unction. the Corona del
Mar Chamber bu drawn many tine people to it.I
l\)embenbip roils. Many of these folb have per·
formed outstanding services for the entire commUJ)-
tty -indudlng areas westerly of A•ocado Annue.
.. Whn. enjoying national sanction, the Newport
• Harbor camber-bu drawn many fine people to it.II
membenbip rolls. Many have emerged to perform
oatstanding eervlces that hue al.so benefitted the
area IOUtbeaaterly of AYocado Aven~.
With all this f1lla over national sanction or
llOIH\atianal sancUon. to me the real tragedy is
that ti.-two fine commWlity organb.ations can't
·find a way to get together.
Row much mot'e could they do if they wen

T he Annual Ghost Story
That tl>Olt 1tory about UNICEF ii clrtulatlng again.
It doea every Halloween. >.. UIUll, lt ia most frighten-
int to the bandtul of Harbor Area residents who tell it
to each other.
several ways, none of them ainister, and the American
people have been arentJ'OUI in supporting UNICEF.
After the atory haa been told -UJually before one
of our City Counclla -no one really tnows what
UNICEF iJ, but the feeling ii left that it is vaguely un..
American and in IOme manner aiding the Communist
caUJie.
Said former Congreaman Walter H. Judd, a con~
servatlve and a noted battler of Communism: "l don't
know any money we have spent anywhere that b11 done
more good and been better administered."
U vaccinating 150 million children agaimt small·
pox. if curint 17 million mothers and children of
yaws, if treatlnt 10 mlllion children with tnchoma and
acute conjunctivltia, If f eedin« and clothing the starvtni
and lick children of the world la aiding the Commu~
cauae, then, yes, UNICEF ii part of a plot.
Hil views have been &bared by such Americana II
Pre3identa Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Dwight D.
Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Not to name Vice President Nixon and Pope John.
Locally, several youth iroups have uked or are
asking for permission to aoUclt for "trick or treat funds
for UNICEF" on Halloween. Their request is made for
reasons of convenience, not as part of a conapincy,
through the local United Nations chapter.
And, yet, it mUJt be admitted that not all of those
treattd and fed are whJte. Cbrlatian children. Those who
restrict their piety to thia deftnition may well find that
UNICEF ii not for them. Somehow, It doesn't aeem likely
that He meant charity to be that narrow when He said,
••suffer little children ... "
In Newport Beach. a Girl Scout troop and a YldCA
organiution asked the UN chapter to seek. city approval
for the fund campaign. The request was denied by a 4-3
vole.
Probably because It bu those two initials "UN" in
Ill Utle. UNICEF ii viewed u an arm of Comintern, part
of a acheme to deatroy free eovernment.
What, then, ii UNICEF?
It ta the United Nations International Children's
Emerrency Fund, founded aft.er World War Il to help
feed and cun a multitude of malnourished and suffer-t.ne children in Europe. It hu accomplllbed much of its
,oaJ OD the Conttnent, then turned ita aighta on the
