A Hippie Revolution?
By THOMAS FORTUNE
Of "" OeltY l"tlet ltaff
The hippie movement, far from
dying, is a wave of the future that
will sweep all present life patterns
before JI.
This startling pronouncement was
made at UCI Sunday night by
respected sociologist Dr. John R.
Seeley.
Seeley made it clear be was not
vo.iclng an alarm but what he sees
St ud11 N ears End
as hope for mankind. He believes
that what hippies ~land f o r
philosophically offers salvation for
man.
Seeley predicted a thoroughgoing
social revolution resulting from "the
awful, shaking, totalistic. convulsive
reaHiation or youth that life lived
the way it Is today is not worth
living."
He spoke to an audience of 400

The study report would then be
submitted to the state Highway C.Om·
mission for .a final decision on whether
to re-open hearings on the route ques·
ti on.
Division engineers were directed by
the Highway Commission .last May
to undertake the study. The action
was sought by Newport Beach city
officials, who contended the adopted
alignment Crom 17th Street down
Newport Boulevar( to the coastline
was out-of-date. The alignment was
ori; .. ally approvcJ in 194-4.
Newport aut.borities also argued that
if Newport Boulevard is replaced by
the freeway, a major local arterial
link between the cities oC Newport
and Costa Mesa would be removed.
The freeway should be routed down
Superior Avenue, ~ tie in with the
Padfic Coast Freeway either at the
coastline or in tle .area oC 15tti Street,

a Mesa spokesmen. led by
Willard Jordan, vigorously pro·
tested the Newport proposal. They
told commissiuners at the May hear-
ing that the adopted route shouJd be
retained. Costa Mesa city street plan-
nJng was geared to it. they said.
State engineer Hashamoto today
said a ''get-together" ls being con·
templated involving bis staff and the
two coastal cities.
He sajd no arrangements have yet
been ma<le for the meeting, but be
expects it to take place shortly after
the division study is completed, and
just prior to its presentation to tbe
HJghway C.Ommission.
He predjcted that the cornrnJsQon
would probably reach "some kind of
determination" on the freeway routing
by early tpring.

The Rev. John Newman. a ruggltd-
looking man with a demure wife,
dep&rted from the Harbor Area today
on the next leg of a speaking tour
to tell Americans of a land blessed
with eternal springs -and cursed
with cruel, unexpected death.
The couple's current speaking tour
quite possibly hu caved their lives.
Until a few weeks ago, tbe7 were
living near the site where Viet Cong
guerrlllu la.st week killed five
American missionaries at Ban Me
Tbuot, Vietnam.
The Newmans were intimate friends
of the victlmJ. Sin<:e 1957, the »year-'
old minuter and bis wife have lived
ln Dalat, some 190 mlles nortbeut
of Sa.icon.
Newman Sunday evening addressed
the congregation of Mariners Com-
munity Cfutrch, Newport Beach, f>D
hb 10 years of Vietnam service.
,All the slain missionaries, he said,
were close personal friends. He said
that in 'addition to the five killed
during the r~id, another missionary
died en route to a Vleinamese
hospital.
He identltied her as Carolyn
Griswold , 41, formerly of White
Plains, N. Y.
Despite the fate of his friends. the
Rev. Mr. Newman said be intends
to return to Vietnam in July.
Re wlll continue his work there
as a member of the Christian and
Missionary Alliance. a non-denomina-
tional organization with headquarters
in New York City.
Newman said it is next to impossible
to identify the enemy among the Viet-
namese be works with, lince from
appearance they are all limllar.
"Tbete are mountain people. They
are atmpJe and aborigjnea. The area
where they live iJ beautiful. It is
eternal spring," be said.
Newman said he supported the
presence of the American military
forces in Vietnam, "although In the
finaly analysis I feel that the
missionll'7-approved way Is the only
sur~ way to peace."
While in Ne~ Beach, the
Newmans were the guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Thompson. of 1812 Dover Drive.

The atart off Point IAma
was in relatively light airl,
but a few mlnutes later a
fresh westerly filled in that
sent the 29-boat fleet bolling
toward Todoc Santos Light

It was in thls breez.e that
Klaloa 11 jumped ldo-an

Captured doewnentl made tt clMr that Hanoi'•

South Vietnam.
'Ibe terror attacks in the cities and the forthcom·
ing major offensive in the north are elements in a plan
to Jbatter oollfldence In the Saigon regime and persuade
the U. S. to tali peace on terins which would lead to
Communist domination of all Vietnam.
Even those, Americans who pass over the Vietnam
headlines with a shrug began to understand the lnten·
sity ol the bitter offensive. Iaotated yet connected incl·
dent.I suob as these brought borne their point:
-Murder by the Viet Cong of five American mil-
lionariea and the k:idnaping of a 11.xth at the leprolar·
iwn they ran.
-Guerrilla bodies laid out at each comer of an
intersect.ion near which two military ~lice had been
killed in their jeep. It was done by alhed troops in the
Beau Geste style of laying dogs at the feet of fallen
heroes.
-The killing of the last member of a Viet Cong
1uidde squad by a senior American diplomat using a
pistol thrown up to h1I tee0nd floor room.
-The wounding of Gts in a narrow street called
"Deadend Aney" by a Cong machine gun nest.
These and other incidents told the horror stqry far mauy even more foreefully than films ot jungle

bloody oUenJive prO\'e!
The enemy pajd terrible odds for the Ameri~ans
and South Vietnamese he tiJJed. And in ground gained,
bis profit 1VU slight. W~t the fierce JWipe did produce was a new
awareness that the price we are paying for our com-
mitment in Vietnam is going up. The real question is
whether it weakened our resolve or altered our mten·
tion to carry out our promises.
Bright Side of the Coin
At a time when large numbers of ·American young
people are risking their mental health and their lives
with drugs, it's well to remember that the vast majQtity
of our youth retains its "cool" in a world of exploding
knowledge.
Boy Scout Week will be observed be~nning Feb. 7.
Adults worried over "what our youth 1S coming to''
should give thought to the world of bright youngsters
of good character around them -and tihen join with
parents of Scouts in rejoicing that sum a constructive
organization continues to thrive.

Johnson's SI68 billion budaet began
to fall apart the moment lt was sub-mitted to Congress. It was alreldv

This bas happened before to Presi-

serious and menacing Berlin crlsla

Now aootber crisis, the crisis of
Aala, confronts Ptuidct Jotwon
with the lneacapeble feet that we
cannot fight a two-front war. we can-
not carry out his AsJan policy on
the presett fiscal basis. Probably also
we caMot carry it out without a

American dilemma, the L o n d o n
Economist has done it best:
''This i& gojng to be Lyndon
Johneon's year. It ls also the year
in which the Americans will have
to make up their minds what they
want to do in the world.
"ID 1868 they have to decide,
perhaps for a generation, whether
they are essentially an Eastward look.-
ing people, who will confine their
attention. to the relatively small part
ot th~ world around the Atlantic
Ocean, or whether they want to go
on carrying their responsibilities
westward into Asia as well.
"The presidential campaign of 19&8
will be the Ammcam' most important

Rouevelt a third teTm . and a free

And the~ can be no mistake either about the thrust of the objection to
this policy in the United State1 itseU,

pnm.1se that we bave no busineN in Alia, our problems at bome need a~

back within ourselves in Isolation from
serious cballenges to world order, 11
we did prior to the mandate Rooteftlt
received in the l!MO electiOQ to can. froot Hitler.
The matter of degree can be argued
on this poinl American interests
might bave *n more clearly ap.
parent in one case than in the other.
But there surely can be no serious
questJoa that those who oppose thi1
war accept the premise that China,

we took with respect to Hitler I.a
1940.
rr WOULD BE WHOLL y wrong
to expect that President Johnson will
back away now from the mission
he has defined and is trying tc; enforce
in Asia. To do ao would be an ad·
mi11ion of defeat no man as proud
as Johnson would accept IC there were
any way to avoid it. Re bas not
gone to Asia, and to Vietnam, twice
merely to get away Crom home but
to refuel his own convictions on the

force the support for It by Asian
