Kirschke Silence By THOM IWlLEY OI 1M OellY .......... Orange County District Attorney Cecil Hicks Monday ended four days of speculation by branding as "a com- plete hoax" the testimony of two men who might have provided an alibi for convictgd killer Jadt Kirschke. Hicks emerged from four days of seclusion to confirm that two m~n who claimed to have see n a man and a ''hard blonde" I e a v i n g Klrschke's Long Beach l!Partment at the time or the murder had admitted to his investigators that they had planned to demand money from Kirschke in return for their evidence. Hicks refused to i~ntify the two men but he confirmed that their evidence has also been discounted by the state attornfy general's office. "It may be fhat they will be pro- secuted for their actions but no decision has yet been made," he said. The district attorney lavished praise on the part played by his investigplors -Eddie Banks and Frank Ox· andaboure - in the cracking of the peeudo witnesses' story. "They did a fantutic job," he said. ''And they did it by getting home to the se men one important premise -that llbe truth was important." Kirschke, 46. a former deputy district atrorney in the Los Angeles County office, was convicted last month of the murder last April 8 of hls dress designer wife, Elaine on the nJgbt ot the murder, HJW said. Attorney Albert C. S. Ramsey, the lawyer who was d!sml.ssed by Kirschke in the later stages ot the murder trial, said Monday that he was now satisfied that the evidence offered by the two "witnesses" wa1 now "absolutely worthless" . "I no longer represent J a c k Kirschke." Ramsey said, "but I am of course deeply Interested In any facet of the trial. Everyone connected with this trial is now satisfied that this was nothing more than an attempt to obt.ain money from my former client by the ofter of false testfmooy,'' Ramsey added. Deputy State Atty. Gen. Albert Har- ris, chief prosecution attorney in the Kirschke trial, was not available for comment Monday but an aide con- firmed 1that the office had now re- jected the testimony of the two wit- nesses. PRINTIN6 SERV1CE ' I 'lll''•FH"-.642-4321 ·• 1111 .... ..... ...... "-""*' .... . . . ly CYNTHIA LOWRY NEW YORK (AP) -There ls somethlnc cu,r.. lous about the way Jut aeaeon'a te\evlJion hit suddenly tW'lll into this season's great big yawn. THE DISTINCTIVE style that macSe the show seem 60 fresh and novel suddenly seems as phony as a three dollar toupee after constant exposure for perhaps a year, maybe longer. Some wear and tear is inevitable. It is imJ>C!Si sible for the fans who tune in weekly about .JU times a year to ignore the devices used, ol" to fall to see plot bones as clearly as if shown in an X·r&y. PE1tHAPS NBC's "I SJ.>y'' which started out three seasoM back with a cnsp, funny and new IP" proaoh to the secret agent businesa, bu been traP" ped by ita own jauntiness. In Monday night's episode, Robert CUlp and, Bill Cosby were their usual fun-loving selves even though bunting a killer, const.anUy ducking bul· lets and under arrest for murder~ Somehow, the old charm ls lacking. After getting accustomed to their frolic- some dialogue ove.r the seasons, it bas suddenly be- come less amusing and more artificial. Maybe the • actors are getting a bit weary bf their roles, too. What started two eeasons ago as a campy put. on called "Batman," today bas become a self-con- sdouly cute bore. The pretentious U6e of the diche, once so droll, begin& to be an irritant once a point of surfeit is reached. 11he result Is that "Batman"· has dropped in the ratings and its pro-- ducer announced recently that it will be among the missing on ABC ne~t season. "DRAGNET" is still another program more notable for its distinctive style than for the con. tent o!f its stories. And, after a time, that style c111 make the viewer downright restless. "Felony Squad" another Monday night aeries, is now in ita eecond eeuon, and does not have much Of a style of its own. But star Howard Duff's po~ trait of a police o!fficer is almost ita signature. He plays the cop as a man with a trigger temper con· stantly on the verge of going off. IN THE MOST recent episode, he was bmy tracking down a man holding a gift for ransom. He seemed more angry at the girl's 'father than he wu at the heavy, and thus the story seemed a bit out of balance. NBC will et.art broadcasting the British-made ''Saint" series on Saturday, Feb. 17 Instead of a week later, as originally planned. Tbe action series, starring Roger Moore, will replace "Maya." ABC PLANS an April 9 special on "The Come- dy of Emle Kovacs." Edie Adams, Kovacs' widow. will be one of the producers of the program which will consist of taped and filmed sketches. Kovac. died in 1962 after an automobile accident. Education's Huge Dividend Attention, all Californians who may still doubt the wisdom o! the taxpayers' heavy investment in public education at all levels.
