ly CYNTHIA LOWRY
NEW YORK (AP) -Dick Cavett, a pleasant,
civil-mannered young comedian, slipped unobtru·
sively onto the daytime tel~vision sce~e ~ond~y
with an ABC rhow called ' Tbls Morning, built
carefully in a mold 10 popular that it ii almoot a
cliche. CAVITT, like J<lhnny Canon, Joey ~ilhop,
Mike Dougl11, Merv Griffin and tne others, ts host
of an informal talk-comedy-music show. '1'!1e only differ~ce is that bJs 90 minutes start(! tn midmorn·
ing and ends at noon.
It is really unfair to judge anything of this
categ<>ry on the basis of the opening program or
even of the openlns week. Cavett, a comedy writer
turned performer, needs time to find and get ac-
customed to his new role of host, and biJ helpers
must have tome time to shake down too.
, · THI OPE.MING sbow, however, wa1 notable fot
its lack of excitement and even of a polnt of view, ~;
Cavett, who bas a self .<feprecatin1 manner and
understated aenee of humor, essayed a few short
jokes that didn't even arouse much enthusl11t11
from the ltudlo aQ<iience.
Then he Lntroduced the band -all these shows
must have an orchestra-and proceeded to struggle
.throuah an Lnterview with Buckmin.st.er Fu!Mr, a
7-2-year-old phllOIOpber, about the latter's theory of
the' Cc)fnlni dommance of womeg.
· JACK ALllltTSON, an aOtor, did a mlld.11
I.musing eketch with the star. Patricia Neal turned
up and talked about her recent Ulneaa and recov·
ery. Pat McConnlct traded quips with Cavett and
Jack E. Leonard appeared in a fur coat. 11nally a
snake handler, with a king cobra whippln1 angrily
around the sta~•. wound UJ> the show .
., THE PROGRAM WU plaeued by frequent in-
terruptions for commerclall, sometimes wben pests
were in midsentence. Sometimes the show would re-
turn to Cavett for onlJ about two aentences bef o~
there was another sales break.
NBC's "Danny Thomas Hour" was a mixed up
murder tale called "My Friend Tony." It wa1 of in·
terest only because the program waa a pilot. film,
made with the idea of 1pinninf tM principal char·
acters off on a future aerie• of their own. M to
often haopens In ruch Ct1&es. the atory was alde-
tracked by the producers' interest ln lhowin1 the
poterti11 I of the main cbaractm.
THEY WERE James Whitmore, playinJ a bril-
liant. gruff criminologist, and EnJo Cerusic, as bis
as.'listant. Tony. Tony was suppoted to be an Italian
street urchin he had adopted durtna the war, and
he e·uded boyiab chum and fl'ldured EngllAh.
The wh~ thing came off badly. The contrast
between the prof eMOr and bia uatttant didn't work
out sympathetically, and the murder story wu ln·
terrupted by fiash bacu and emJl'k>na into the
prof eqsor's class room lectures.

Cory romes up for election this year, as does ev~

typical of mny la that Cory la a marginal Democratic

That leaves Cory, who barely beat out (by a margin
of just 1,000) rue Republican opponent in the 1968 el~·

For tile Republlcans want Cory's seat. It is one of the
seatl that may take control of the California Assembly
away from JeMe Unruh.
The shoo · in Assembly candidates -Badham
Burke and Brigge -won't need money and they wiH be
conducting their campaigns on minimum standards. So
the money that would go to their efforts -the money
from Watter Knott and from all of the other GOP ~
