"I would much rather have batanced

The question oi Maravicb'a value
came up at the weekly basketball
writers' hmcbe<ll when Wooden ...
aUed if towering Lew Akindor of
the Bnd.ns, with a 26.3 per game
averaie, shouldn't be scoring more.
"I want my player1 to acort," the
?.0-year Bruin coach 1aid, "and I want

Toward the end of tne season, Wooden
instail.led a 1-3-1 trap zone defense.
Laat Saturday, when the Bruins beat
croastowb rival Southern California
7U4, the defen9e wu 3·1·1 1ooe.
Wooden said it forces the opponents
to aboot from the corners.
"I've coached with the pblloeophy
that you never make radical chm'lges for any one game.
"But tbeo too. you don't stay with
the same thing. either." he sa.1d.
He said one of the zones probably
would be used Friday when his
second-ranked Bruins take on New
Mexico Slate in Albuquerque, N.M.,
in the first round of the NCAA
Western Regional playoffs.
For years Wooden has been an ad·
voca~ of a time clock to force a
team to shoot within a specified time
limit.
Asked to comment on North
Carolina State's tactics of holding the
ball for 13 minutes against Duke last
Fri.day night, Wooden aaid it was
good strategy.
