It all started when the Charles Cot·

monkeys was swinging from limb to
limb on a tree out.aide the bedroom
window and "railing a terrible
racket.''

Klopp strongly recommended that
Tarzan and Jane (the two monkeys)
be put back in their cages.

Crane Drop Ticklish Operation
By ARTHUR R. VINSEL
Of Ille DllY ...... Iliff
Whatever goes up must come down,
including the 40-ton crane delicately
ba'anced atop Costa Mesa's lofty
Bethel Towers, tallest building in
Orange County.
Monday ls the day.
Good luck, feBows .
"A lot of them have been dropped ,"
says Carl Mosley, resident engineer
for builders of . the 18-story, $3.3
milllnn gtructure .
Mosley and his men actually don't
expect any real trouble in removing
the new Linden Heede crane, but there
is no margin for error.
"There's one way it can be done
and ooe way ODly ," Mosley said, aa
the Swedish-built machine bolsted
final buckets of concrete high into
a smoggy haze.
••1t•s pretty dam tricty," be added.
The big crane must be dirmanUed
into nearly 3> components -pJece
by baianced piece -each of wbJcb
ii then lowered to the ifOUnd by
a second crane.
Workmen for the J, H. McKee
Coostruct:lon Co. Friday w e r e
assembling • 2SG-f00t boom for the
Bragg Crane Service n:iachine to be
used in the day-long removal job Moii·
day.
Mosley said a crew of seven nien,
veter1lDs at removing the unique,
Linden Heede crane, which rises atop
the structures lt ls u9ed to build,
will handle ttle job.
"It's a fair guess to say It will
take all day," MoS'ley estimates.
The danger factor involved in
dismantling the crane u that each
part must be removed In ptoper se-
quence, or the rig might become un-
balanced and topple 18 stories to the
ground ..
"We dropped one at the Disneyland
Hotel," Mosley ndmita candidly.
First component to come down Mon-
day will be the concrete counterweight
used to balance the Undea Heede
cnme and its varioua loads during
construction of Bethel Towers.
If -to simplify explanation -the
crane boom were removed first,
Mosley said, it would create an im·
' balance, probably with disutrOU4
resulta.
Other parts of the crane will then
be individually disaS&embled 8114
lowered to the ground, including ~·
power unit, weighing about six tom.Ar
Mosley aald the 120-ton CNDe whieh
will lift parta of the Linden H~
rig to the growld ls not norm~
used to lift anything heavier ~
three tons on suc;b a long boom, 1 Mosley says the technique of moun-
ting the crane for construction ,qf
a high-rise building on each suc1
ceeding story as it is built has only
been in use for five or six years.
These Linden Heede cranes are
mounted on the center core of the
structure and raised as each level
ia compl~ until the bulldini \&
complete, then taken down fot anotbC
job.
MOlley said the Bethel Towers
retirement facllity, built byrnl· •
subsidiary of the Southern Calilo a
D!Jtxict Council of the .Msemblles of
God, Inc., is about 73 percent co.rn-
pleted. . The 270.unft home will be finished
and ready for oecupaocy by a m~
lmum of (SO tenlor citizens JuJy ·1,
U wort continues on schedule. / • •
The nonprofit church organlzati1Ht
plans a second Bethel Towers bulldbfg

DEAR ANN: I have an unusual problem. Too
many brains. It all started when I was in the sev-

for ~e seventh grade so they promoted me to the
eighth. I didn't like the kids in the eighth ~e be-
cause aR my friends were in the seventh. I did well
a<:ademkaily but I was
unhappy emoliionally.
When it came time to

business course, but my
counselor and my mother
dediced I HAD to go to

to take subjects to prepare
me.

had work that some ol the
other kids won't get until

The Draft
By HELEN B. SHAFFER
Editorial Research Reporll
Rewu.nce to mllltary service ln
Vietnam i1 abaplng up M a national
movement wtth plenty Of mu1cle and
srowtb potenUal. With draft calls rll-
lnl -April's call·up of 48,000 was
the largest ln 18 months -the number
of draft rebels ii expected to rise,
too. Tbe ~· rule eliminating nearly
all deferments of graduate students,
to take effect in June, allo could
have the effect of pushlna up the
number of draft realaters. College
itudents constitute the sepnent of
the youth population moat strongly
oppoeed to U.S. policy oD Vietnam.
One lilJl of the t:m)d is th• attitude
of govmunenl As the number of
draft card burners increued, the
1overnment cHIMd to regard them as harmless eccentrics. It began to
tigbtan the screws OD both the draft
rest.tc-1 and their elders who en-
courage them to resist.
THE CHANGE Is apparent in a
number Of ways: police putting down
campus rebellions, draft b o a r d s
withdrawing deferments of antiwar
protesters, and judges handing out
harsher sentences to draft law
violators. Draft law conviction1 in 1967
totaled 5162, compared with 450 in
1966 and 243 In 1965.
The government also indicted on
Jan. S five protesters, aJI put draft
age, for "alding and abetting'' de·
{lance of the draIL Among the live
were Dr. Benjamin M. Spock, the
antiwar pedlatrlcl&n. and William
Sloane Coffin Jr., the Presbyterian
chaplain of Ya.le University. Con-
viction on the charges could bring
a five-year pruon sentence and a
•10,000 fine.
ESCALATION Of the government's
counterattack only put a spur to
escalation o! the resistance. Less than
a week after his indictment. Dr. Spock
told an antiwar r a 11 y that "What
this country needs is thous.ands Of
dralt resisters." And a move was
under way to obtain 100,000 slgnatlU"ea
to a .tatement of complicity with
the Spock group which in effect would
make the signer equally liable with
the five defendants to the charge of
''aiding and abetting" draft
resistance.
An organization called New England
ResiJtance is one of approximately
75 local or regional associations of
YRUDg Il\en who have taken some
acti01) in re.&lstance of the draft. 'n\la
association r~ntly claimed that the
national resistance movement "bu
mobilized 1,300 clergy and 12,000
faculty and professionals to publldy
aid and abet us."

they called "a literally untrue story."
The article, which appeared in \be

Some may find it odd that tbt elder·

article to carry protest signs in the

vided proof of her aetnpdon and a
refund was made by the JJlS.
One wonders if the lDij>resslon of
immediate coofrontation that the
Diput'a account gives la a fair one.
Stating that the IRS would "dispose
ol ber old car Wlleas sbe paid up
that da11" gives an inacc:urate im-
pression when we see that IRS made
numereus et.tempts firtt to get the
proper information from her and then
the payment.
In the case of a uniCll leader once
convicted of extortion. the DiQut
states that the "IRS settled hia unpaJd
tax debt of $40,219.84 for a token
$17,000 plus an agreement that he
v:ouJd pay m~ If laia tncome rOM.'"
The article quotes the IRS as stating
that there wu "no prospect of any
material increase'' in the union
leader's income, and cites politJc~l
donations that be made to the
Democratic ~ Qimmittee.
All of this Jq~es the reader with
the impreuion that the IRS ~
him to 1• away for pa:yt:nc -1y
117,000 ot..Ml tax debt of. '40,2.UM.
But In f~ the $17,000 was tbe first
payment, 'Yhlcb was followed bJ a
~ent ol S3,586.14 on May 11, 1986,
and a final payment of the entire
remain.in& balance, including pen.Wes
and interest. on October 2S, 1966.
' IT MAY BE THAT the leade~as
accorded partial treatment beCause
ol political donations, but to leave
the rUder with tbe impression th.a&
he did not pay bis tax debt wheb
ln fact be did is a disservice to
the truth.
Thia ~n is further exa<:erbated
by the fact that the Digtst retose.s
to pdnt Haponses from those who
disagree with its c o n c 1 u s i on s .
However, in the -case of the Iuternal
Revenue Service article, the Diat!t
recognized the existence of the <:on·
troversy with a boxed statement in
its November, 1967, issue. Tbe box
defended the article, but at ldat in·
eluded a quoted statement frun the
IRS commissioner.
Certainly, as 1ovemmental and
other .institutiOD& continue to grow
larfer, there is a ireater need for
lborouhg invutiptive reporting. But
that reporting needs balance more
than It does a proeecutor' s zeal.
In this case, it is obvious that while
no one loves the taxman, be deleTfeS
to be treated with more faJrneu
than he wu by the Reader'• Digf 1t.

Despite Some Problems, The Beat Went On
'Most everyone knows that mit~siud Pct
Clark can sina up a macro-sized ~torm. But
no one in the world could have ~ the
kinds of minor and major whirlwinds that
would surround the taping of her ftrst Amer-
ican TV spccial-"Petula"-Tuesday. 9 PM.
on NBC. spon!Ored by Plymouth.
There was, for instance. the problem of
7000 miles separating Petula and her hus-
band. Claude Wolff, the executive producer.
from the special's producer-director Steve
Binder. The British songsrress and her hus-
band were in France. Co-producer Yvonne
Littlewood was in London. Binder and the
writers wen working on the script in Holly-
wood. Communication was difficult.
Then came January and the entire project
almost went down the drain when Pet frac-
tured her ankle while skiing in France.
Rumor had it that the 5pecial was off.
But pessimists failed to reek.on with the
phenomenon that places the dynamic energy
of an atomic reactor within the confines of
a blonde, 98-pound form. Petula had her
ankle placed in a removable cast, found she
could walk, even dance. and flew to Holly-
wood to start ttheanals.
It is an ambitiou~ program, with loca1ion
shooting on the Queen Mary ocean liner, at
the Hollywood Bowl. on MaJibu beach. in
various comftclda and on railroad tracks.
Not only did Pct romp through the rou-
tines, but did 90 with a ftair and spunk that
have become her trademark.
Then, during filming at the Beverly Hills
El Rodeo Grade School (when a 60-pieoe
1e:hool orchestra appears in one segment).
Petula wu accidentally hit in the nose with
a baseball thrown by one of the children.
Still, no permanent damage was done and
until Monday, March 4. things went smooth-
ly.
And why not? For after all, prerty Pet
is a ttal pro. Though well known to Ameri-
can audiences only since her smash-hit re-
cording of "Downtown" a few years ago.
she was a child star in England. Multi-
lingual, 5be has recorded songs in many
languages. and at varioll3 times has had the
top recording in France, Holland. Switz.et·
land, Germany, Italy and England. Inter-
nationally, she leads all female vocalists with
combined sales of 2S million records. Ha
husband is also her manager, and they have
two little daughters. She has done 2.5 TV
specials in EnaJand. Recently, she completed
a co-etarring role with Fred Astaire in the movae vasioo ol "Finian'a Jlainbow." And

style that appeaJs to teenagen and oldsters.
A major part of that appeal is the meaning
she 11ves to the lyrics-for to Petula. the
lyrics are the heart and soul of a song.
"I always test a song 10 see if the words
move me, .. she aays.. "Rh¥t}un and beat are
the bloodstream of music, but communica-
tion with audiences comes through the
lyrics."
Dl.lcussing her 1964 hit, ''Downtown,"
Miu Clark uya: "l don't know how many
thousands of times I've suns it, bot I never
get tired of it. I ung it differently now. At
fint I thought it was a happy, joyful song;
now I see it's really a tngic song. That's
the difference between singing and interpttt-
ing. I interpret a aon1. You live with it and
eventuaUy you let it come oot, touched by
what's inside you. You become a sort of

"Todays aongs," she continues, "reflect

As her sole guest star, Petula selected 1
singer she greatly admirn. Harry Belafonte.
And it was on that fateful Monday in Mardi
that the biggest whirlwind of alt erupted
almost without warning.
Belafonte had arrived at NBC Studios ill
Burbank to tape his portion of the show.
The two singers were doing their only duet
of the program. a aong ca11ed "Paths of
Glory," a plea for brotherhood and peace,
with lyrics by Miss C lark. As Belafonte
was lat.er to tell it: "During the last verse
we were standing next to one another and
my arms were slightly folded in front of
me. Pet reached out and placed her hand
on my arm in a feeling of warmth and
camaraderie "
At that moment a man who is an ad
manager for Plymouth. jumped up and
walked out of the taping in protest. rhen
demanded that the sequence be re-taped.
Both Wolff and Binder refused. NBC backed
them up, and the sequence remained.
Next day Belafonte let loose a barrage
of criticism. charging Plymouth with "rac·
ism." According to Belafonte, Young &
Rubicam. ad agency for Plymouth, felt that
this particular scene was "against the client's
best interests." Said Belafonte: 1'hey said
their southern dealers wouldn't like it-that
old turkey. But Pet and I refused to back
off."
A few days later the "we11 win you over

as a service to the industry,'' the singer aaid,
"that this should be expoeed as often as it

Second Generation Jones
The Horatio AJaer rule book is strict, but it hardly prohibita a
lad from foUowin1 in t.be footfiepl of his father-especially if the
career of the tire hu been an illustrious one.
Jack Jones, the son of the famous
baritone Allan Jones and the glamor-
ous actress, Irene Hervey, did, in
fact, "take over the family business,"
and did it in spectacular fashion.
In show busmesll, his case. how-
ever, ill not unique. The examples
ftourisb about us on screens and
stages throuahout the world: Eliza-
beth Montgomery, ~ia Farrow,
Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Jane and Peter
Fonda. to name a few.
The list aoes on: Liza Minnelli,
Gary Lewis, The Sinatra5--Nancy
and Frank Jr., The Nelson~.Ricky
and David. the Thomu girl-Marlo.
Throw in also Noel Harrison, Mae-
dirh MacRae, David Carradine, John
Drew Barrymore, the Cr°'by boys
and Jerry Lanning (Roberta Sher-
wood's son).
Of young Jones it can be observed
supremely that he is his father's son.
He is trim and clean-cut handsome
in a manner that radiates a sugges-
tion of ruggedness, a combination
that guarantees rapt attention from
the ladies.
It's safe to predict that a large
contingent of Jones admirers--of
both sexes-will be watching two
upcoming network TV shows on
which he's scheduled 10 appear. Jack
guest-stars with Red Skelton on
April 2, and with Jonathan Winters
on April 17. ·
Jones' meteoric career can be
credited to youthful determination.
Por hi' father did not wish that
young Jack should be an entertainer.
OUc:ouraged it, in fact.
"But when he saw how interested
and sincere J was," the talented
young vocalist rKalled, "he provided
me with singing lessons, and more
important, a good musical founda-
tion."
Jones was a teenager at the time.
Now one of the popular musical
world's briaJitest stars, Jones, the
happy husband of Jill St. John, contemplates the day when he too
will be the advitor of a teeoaae ·offspring.
Would he attempt to disauade a son or daughter from a career in
the entertainment business?
"J don't think it makes any difference what I want," Jones re-
sponded. "He will make his own decisions. That's the way it is."
He brighteoed, addina: "You know, I have a dauah1er, six years
old. She wants to be an artist. I think she bu a lot of lalent-in
her stage of dnwio1, naturally.
"She bas such a great eye. I thinks she could be a marvelous
anist someday, but that will have to be her decision, not mine.
"I think that's the cue with all of us. whatever the fteld of our
parent5. You have to feel 1 career to believe in it and to succeed
in it."
Milct Nesmith. of NBC's The Monll:ees, says the best treatment
for a manic depressive to make him well again is a manicure. • • •
Television fans have probably noticed that NBC's "Get Smart"
frequently does take-offs on various books. movies and television
shows. This past season alone epi9odes have spoofed "'Tbc PrisQner
of Zenda." "I Spy," '1'he Fugitive," "Man from U.N.C.L.E."
and "Or. No," ·

The recent hard-hitting re-

a distinct responsibility on

The pMel maintained that

"In addition to news-re·

that tlelroes should appear
more frequently In dramatic

AnticiSMdlnl. or at least
aoing along with the tenor of
the times, four of the 17 new

have Necroes playing key rotes. Most of them are on
