La Habra police believe
someone deliberately may have.
Jammed the accelerator of a
dump truck with a rock early to-
day then aimed it in the direction
of an unoccupied house.
Orticers said the dump truck,
owned by James Randel of La
Habra, smashed through the side
of an empty house at 271 E. Lam-
bert St. at 6 a.m. causing ex·
tensive damage.
Investigators found the truck's
accelerator was being weighted
down with a rock, police said.
In addition, the vandala also
tossed lighted flares inside the
truck perhaps in an unsuccusful
effort to ignite the truck's
gasoUne tank, police said.
The owner of the house waa
identified as Rocky Occhluto of
Brea, police sa1d.

.Airport studies can go on for years. What they will

It doesn't take a shelf full of airport studies to figure

$5 Million Meeting
By the end of their three-day conference in Houstoq
last week, the 2,000 delegates to the National Women's
Conference had approved 25 of 26 resolutions placed before
them. The only one rejected was a proposal for a Cabinet·
level women's department.
It would be hard to argue with most of the 25 recom-
mendations that will be transmitted to President Carter
and thence to Congress. In fact, there was little if any
argument from the heavily outnumbered minority of so-
called anti·f eminist delegates in attendance.
The majority zipped through a list that included a call
for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment; an in·
creasing role for women in f ore!gn policy decisions and in
the media: upgrading ot job opportunities; improved
health insurance and services for the elderly; funding of
child abuse programs; enforcement of existing credit and
rehabilitation laws and -more controversial -support
for abortion programs and legislation to end discrimina·
tion against lesbians.
But one facet of the session could l>e even more con-
troversial. It was the first federally funded national
women's conference in history, paid for with a $.S million
congressional appropriation of tax money.
Perhaps the meeting was &ft successful and as signifi-
cant as its delegates believe1 Bat <me is lncl2ned tO wonder ~
what other groups now will oe seeking financing from our
· generous Congres~. A precedent seems to have been set.
A Winner
If the very obvious financial success of the Or8.flie
County Fair's thoroughbred horse racing meet at Los
Alamitos is given due consideration, the California Horse
Racing Board would have to look favorably on a repetition
oftbe event next year. .
The fair board had boped to net up to $250,000 from the-
meet if betting averaged about $1 million on each of the 12
race days.
The daily average reached $1.4 million and the fair
now is looking at a $300,000 profit. That will be enough to
secure some substantial loans toward launching the boped-
for $16 million upgrading of the county fairgrounds in
Costa Mesa for year-round use. Fair officials say each
$100,000 should secure a loan of $1 million.
Also not to be sneezed at by the racing board ls the '1
million the state will receive from its 6.5 percent share of
the betting.
No doubt the Los Angeles County tracks, HollYWOOd
Park and Santa Anita. will continue to oppose the Los
Alamitos race meet, arguing that allocation of the race
days to the big tracks would be even more profitable.
But the trial run showed clearly that l>ranse County
and its immediate neilbbors will turn out and put cash on
the line when the thoroµgbbreds are running locally.

.New York r;»•hJ New•
WHEN I FIRST saw the Ramones at PBGB•a
in 1974. I was knocked out by tbe1r loud, c•tcby
three-minute soaia perfonned at bNakneclt speed.
What a deU1ht to only have to alt tbro9Jb a
three-minute 10Dll 'lbelr onstqe (and oft1ta1e>
look was black leather Jacketa. jeau and
sneakers -a welcome relief from that aaUD
trouser /platform shoe overdose we'd had for t.O
manyyeara.
I returned to CBGB's (it WU theo the (J1}y
place where the Ramones could tet a boOk!ng ) to
see the quartet from QueellS again and acatn.
·They signed with Sire Records (then tbe only
company with the foNsleht to make them an of·
fer), got rock maven Danny Fields to manage
them , and ln 1975 recorded their first LP, tilled
simply "Ramones."
wrru FIELDS'S asslltance, they began to
. perform more around tfle rest of the country.
Fields would call me from the road to report that
the band got 41eir best response in staid Orange
County where the surfers would pound on the
tables, stomp on the floor, and cheer on the skin-
ny, urban foursome. Ramones will perfortn Dec. 5
at The Golden Bear, HuntinatonBe•ch.
Dee Dee, Johnny, Joey and Tommy Ramone
(n9ne o{ whom are brothers) aot great press
from those critics who were encouraged by the
idea of all that energy again. Those of us not
especially intrigued by tbe sollt!r sounds of
Fleetwood Mao. or the prettiness Of Peter
Frampton, were particularly possessive about
this band.
While rumored bisexual bassaBt Dee Dee
could often be seen scarred and stag1erlng
around local New York clubs with a volaWe girl friend \p tow (their violent arguments are New
York rock and roll le1ends, she's even had him
thrown ia jail), lead singer Joey's image was
tweet and shy -be is also, at IJ-4, one of rock's
tallest fiiures.
DRUMMER TOMMY seemed the most. '
logically '<normal" or the band, but those ln·
timately familiar with the Ramones tnow that
it 's macho guitarist Johnny who is the real power
behind the outfit.
With producers Tony Bongiovi and T.
Erdelyl, the Ramones recorded their second LP
-"Ramones Leave Home" -in the fall of 1976,
and it was better <and more expensive to make)
than the first.
The Ramones were always a huge senntion
in England where they're credited with starting
the "new wave" when they performed ln London
on July 4, 1976.
At that time, many punk ~ds exilted; they
had names but they dJdn 't perform, and the Seit
Pistols (who were performing) did Stooges songs
exclusively.
In 1977, Sire Records signed a distribution
deal with Warner Brothers Records. and at the
same time, Frank Barsalona's prestieious
Premier Talera took the band on for bookings.
They recenUy performed at Palladium ln New
York, and were great on a bi& stace. nearly steal·
