DROWNIN2 PREVENTION TASK FORCE
The Orange County Drowning
Prevention Task Force was formed in
September 2015.
It was a concept from the City of Irvine Council Members and
the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) .

The World Health Organization estimates 372,000 fatal
pj drownings worldwide occur each year.
It is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury
deaths accounting for 7% of all injury related deaths.
Low and middle income countries account for over
90% of unintentional drowning deaths.
j Mozambique is number one in drowning deaths per
capita. (19.07 per 100,000)
USA ranks 138 out of
(1.34 per 100,000)
172 reporting countries.

' The CDC reports that in the United States, 10 people
die every day from unintentional drowning - over

, 3,600 annually.
One in five drownings are children 14 and younger.
For every one child that drowns, another five
receive emergency department care for non-fatal
submersion injuries.
More than 50% of non-fatal drowning incidents
treated in emergency rooms require further care
t compared to 6% of all unintentional injuries.
It is estimated that the U.S. spends $273 million each
year in direct and indirect costs of drowning.
California
• A 2014 Red Cross survey found 54% of all Americans
cannot swim or have basic swimming skills (100 yards
,1 continuously and tread water for 2 minutes) .
• On average, there are 54 annual deaths, 34 of which
are in pools (63%).
• Alaska ranks first in drownings per capita (3.4 per 100,000).
• California is 22nd (1.0 per 100,000).
• The California Department of Development Services cares
for 755 survivors of non-fatal drownings that require lifelong
support.
• Senate Bill 442 signed by Governor Brown in September.
